97.5/WTHK then and now

Strange. I keep comparing the two but it's starting to bug my eyes.

***Just where exactly should the signal be improving? And are they now having to protect WIXM, where they apparently didn't have to worry about it before?

***And all of this is just so they can call themselves a Philadelphia station (for the sale, of course)?

It's not about the BIG circle ... it's about the LITTLE
circle you don't show. The one that now has the strong
70 dbu signal where there are millions of people, rather
than thousands. What matters in FM is the number of
people within a 20 mile radius of the tower.

Inside the city of Philadelphia. Right now, in the city, it's not very easily tunable (on a car radio with effort, and mostly impossible on a small radio), especially in Manayunk and Roxborough ...And probably West and Southwest Philly (which are parts of the city where, when Radio One buys it, it's really going to need to come in well).
______________

Haha... way to slip that comment in there.

Radio One mentioned in the trades the other day that they were interested in single-station deals in markets where they already owned stations, so they very well could have their eyes on 97.5.

It would be a nice upgrade for the formats on 107.9 or 103.9, but I have to wonder what they'd be planning on for a 4th format since the Urban market is completely saturated. There's only one market where they own 4 Urban-targetted FMs, and that's Atlanta, where they do Smooth Jazz in addition to Urban, Urban AC, and Gospel. Would they want to take on WJJZ or would they want to do something unexpected like a Spanish-language format?

I guess we can assume all the other Philly owners under the cap are in the running for 97.5 too. Those would be Greater Media, Beasley, and Salem.

Re: 97.5/Radio One

Maybe Radio One could bring Y100 back at 97.5, since Y100 was getting decent ratings.
______________

After what the COO of Radio One said about Alternative radio in Philadelphia (the fans won't fill out diaries, no ratings outside the morning show, etc.), I think it's safe to say Radio One won't be doing Alternative for a long time.

That could have been a convenient excuse to help ease the pain of the plan they were executing on 100.3 FM. Radio One does have some Alt stations so they at least have the experience. I don't think it'd be the most inconceivable idea possible.

Really? Would you care to name them???

Radio One is NOT interested in programming to "whitey".

And, IF there are any rock stations under their watch...the days are numbered. They will tank the station in order to urbanize all of their properties.
______________

WLRS, Louisville, which they bought out.

WAEG, Augusta, GA, which they actually flipped TO Alt. from Urban Oldies because they thought the Urban market was "too cluttered". I think Philly is at that point right now.

They also own a couple of country stations, and signed on a Spanish-language station in Houston. Point is, it doesn't happen often, but even Radio One knows that not ALL stations can target the Black audience.

I don't think they'd flip to Alt. in Philly because of the Y100 baggage, but they could definitely do another non-Urban format.

It's all white or black. That's how radio works. LOL. You are right. (Except for the fact that you're wrong.)

Why even bother? Think whatever delusional thoughts you want.

As in ever. There's no reason for Radio One that Radio One would want to revive Y-100.

My point actually was you'd think they'd want to take advantage of ALL audiences available to them. If Clear Channel and their ilk can run urban stations....yadda, yadda, yadda.

No, this has nothing to do with the usual argument we're both entangled in. Just, I guess, it still bothers me in year 2K5 that we have seperations between the races, and Radio One points out the hypocrisy of how "they can, but we can't". Just an observation.
______________
