97.7 & 101.7 Chuck FM

Do these stations have some kind of agreement of something? 101.7 is the original, and is owned by Apex, but 97.7 in Greenville, who is owned by Cox, sounds almost identical except that it doesn't play 'new' stuff like 101.7.

The name, logo, imaging, voice, everything are identical. Is Cox just copying what Apex has done, or is Apex somehow licensing the "Chuck" brand/sound to Cox? The logos are identical except for the frequencies. Exact same VO. Both stations have the "commercial free workday" from 9am-12pm. I'm thinking there's some kind of coordination somewhere?

Interesting. Of course, I'd probably like the original version (with some new music thrown in). Not that I don't like Chuck in Greenville. I do. But, as you know, I like to hear some new stuff too.

When I first read your post, I had hoped that maybe that 101.7 signal was in Greenville too.

Yeah, they're Chuck-FM, but they don't have the same logo/stunts/etc

Actually, I checked 101.7 Chuck FM's online playlist out, and they aren't playing any real "new" stuff anymore, it seems. Their playlist looks like a duplicate of 97.7 Chuck FM in Greenville.

101.7 has been much more established. It started off at 96.1 before it moved to 101.7. Still, the station has been on almost five years and there hasn't been a single personality on the station.

Apex is so cheap with their stations. 95.9 doesn't have any personalities. WSPO doesn't have a single local talk show or even any local sports rights (just Fox Sports off the bird). I don't know if 99.3, their Spanish station has any. Kickin' doesn't have many personalities.

Chuck was something Apex made up before they started the station.

Yeah, I know they made it up. That's why I doubt Cox just went and copied the whole Chuck stunts, logo, imaging voice (nothing wrong with that, I guess)....the whole 9 yards without having some kind of coordination with Apex. Perhaps Apex licensed the whole template for some $$?

looks Like the Chuck brand is just a version of the Bob brand. You want to be a Bob FM?
You hire the consultant who owns the brand and bring it to your market. The playlist, imaging,
and marketing is delivered to you. I'd guess the Chuck thing is just another consultant
copying the brand, but changing the name to avoid legal problems.

We have had Steve FM in Columbia too, I wonder how many other "name" brands there are out there, this is not counting all the animal names cat, dog, hog, wolf, rooster, ect...

Yep!...this listening, still like it, please continue to roll on,...but no you don't play everything! So far, no Ernest Tubb, Narvel Felts,...and nothing from the Ethyl Mermon disco album (yes, it does exists!).
Thank You, Chuck!

By "Play Everything", I think they mean "everything" that the target audience wants to hear. Not sure what that is, but I'd guess M/F25-54.

I say go get 'em, Chuck - sounds light years better than WROQ or either of the AC's!

One year I was on my way to Myrtle Beach and I heard a voice say "Chucktown", which is a nickname for Charleston. So I figure that's what that means.

Not bad considering they probably didn't start to get very well known until in to January. Not to mention that it's a translator.

i am not a cheerleader, just a reporter.

I'm not sure, but my guess is that The Think Tank might be 50/50 dee-vided right down the middle on this, but I'll weigh-in as we get to the end of this well constructed run-on sentence.
As I've said before, regarding both AC's in the GSP market....The battle for Office Listening is over! Sat Radio has that ground, and commercial radio is foolish to attempt a reclaim. Sat Radio can be found anywhere from Dr. Foot's office...to where we pay $3.65 for gas. The subscriber gets what they want, with no commercials, and they can right it off their taxes, as an "Entertainment expense". IT'S OVER!!!! So, here goes Chuck FM buying TV spots to point out 9a-noon, with no commercials.
I agree with running the ads, but you're trying to dig a ditch with a sand shovel! The station has a good sound, instant appeal, and 4-humpin' translators. The future is good, but the battle for Office Listening is dryed blood.

Do you mean background music/"Muzak", Scooter? Most individual "at work" listeners in offices that just listen to a clock radio on the cubicle/desk aren't going to get satellite. Heck, now they can listen online or on smartphones.

I still hear some offices use OTA radio. Hair salons, banks, dollar stores, just various small businesses. I don't know if there is any benefit for them to pay for piped in music.

The similarities are amazing. There are places that do play OTA radio. A lot of them. Mostly those places, but it still has an audience. Chuck in Charleston has done those ads for years too.
