97.7 & 99.5, now giving away $10,000...is it for real?

Over the July 4th weekend, I tuned into 97.7 & 99.5 (by the way, 97.7 sounds much better, they must have fixed the problem, anyone else tell a difference) & now they are saying they are giving away $10,000 to help name their new station.....I went to www.nameusandwin.com and submitted my name for the station, I liked the classic country that they used to play, but for $10,000.00, i'll submit my name... any suggestions on a new name.....I submitted WACK FM, I thought it was funny.....Has anyone else submitted a name at www.nameusandwin.com?

I hope this promotion isn't like another radio station's that I heard of one time. The station was giving away 10 grand, and a woman called in and won a 10 Grand candy bar. I think she sued, I'm not sure.

I'm gonna submit my own name because it would be cool to have a radio station with the same name as me.

I question what you really get because this is in the rules:

"The Prize: The total prize will be no more than $10,000."<P ID="signature">______________

I believe that they probably say that the prize is limited to $10,000 because multiple entries of the same name wouldn't each win $10,000. What do they say in the rules about that?

Station sounds great since they moved the towers on both 97.7s!

I called 97.7 & 99.5 & they definitely are giving away $10,000, but let's say 5 people submit the name they use, then each of those people will be chosen to a location where one of them will win the $$$10,000$$$, no it is not like the other stations, especially the one who gave away the "100 grand" candy bar, (not the 10 grand like stated below, there isn't even a candy bar called 10 grand) this one is for real, and we still have 24 more days to submit an entry....why can't people just be excited about the chance of $10,000 instead of always finding or looking for fault with everything???? Yes, the station does sound great since they did improvements..i am very anxious as to what name they will choose & for someone (hopefully me) to win $10,000.......

They haven't moved the towers yet...

...or were you being sarcastic?

The stations sound terrible because nobody can hear them. The 99.5 format was perfect for its location, as was Georgetown's 97.7. This format is too "mass" for the Oxford 97.7. I can't get a clean signal from them even in Sharonville. That's pretty bad.

They filed license to cover apps for the move of WOXY to the WKOI-TV tower and WAXZ to a tower near Ripley. I assume this means those moves have been made, as WOXY's signal is now slightly stronger in the Dayton area. However, this is only temporary if they get their allocations changes for Mason and Salt Lick. The net effect near Cincy is probably just moving the areas of co-channel interference around.

I thought WOXY sounded stronger. I live in Springfield and can get a listenable signal out of them.

Dayton Radio, you are correct, the WOXY is stronger, i can get it in places that i couldn't get before, no matter what "good" things you tend to say about 97.7 & 99.5 , it seems that there are a "few" radio-info guys that only have negative things to say, i am not the only one who can definitely hear a huge difference in WOXY, it does sound better, and it is stronger and I am excited about the $10,000 give a way they are doing....I also don't get involved into "where this station is moving, or what fcc filings have or have not" been filed, i was just stating info about their contest & the sound, then "oscar & techie" post something negative....I wish WOXY would stay the way they are now with "no commercials" but i understand they will have to pay the bills soon...I just hope there isn't some obnoxious morning person who does nothing but talk..For the record, i am glad 97.7 changed their format to what they are playing now, I LOVE IT!

Whoops, typo. Man, I feel stupid.

Do you live in Sharonville? Because if you do, that makes two of us.

Not IN, but NEAR...

So I get a great signal on the northern stations like WPFB AM/FM, WCNW, and the pther north suburban ones, but 97.7 has always been weak.

Stop hurting my feelings!

Boo hoo.

Enjoy the format while you can. When the Mason move happens, Radio One is buying it and flipping it to either Smooth Jazz or urban AC.

The countdown begins....

Re: They haven't moved the towers yet...

I haven't gotten to listen at length, signal does seem a bit stronger. In Fairborn, I get them or the LPFM pair out of Huber Heights.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: Stop hurting my feelings!

Well, well. Sounds like i hit a nerve with "Oscar" or a Radio One "engineer", sounds like Oscar knows a little too much about the trimulcast of one of the best Cincinnati Radio stations, the 2 97.7's & 99.5. Oscar is on the inside of this deal....So Oscar, when will this sale go down? This is RADIO-INFO, please indulge us "nobody's" with the info on this deal? This makes me sad, I wish this format was here to stay.

Re: Stop hurting my feelings!

It does sound like "Oscar" knows a lot about the switch on 97.7 and 99.5? If he is on the inside of this deal, what's in it for him - 3 more stations to look over? FYI - I drove through Sharonville today and 97.7 was sounding great!

Re: Stop hurting my feelings!

From reading Oscar's numerous insightful posts on this board, I'd say he's a seasoned radio veteran who is simply making an educated guess. And I agree with him. Considering the politics of consolidation and everything else we know about the current broadcast business climate, it makes sense. Radio One buys it and flips it to Urban AC or Smooth Jazz. Or perhaps they shift the already Urban AC leaning WIZF to a full bore Urban AC and skew younger with 97.7 and 99.5 with hip hop. Somehow I just don't think First is really all that serious about the current format.

First isn't serious about any format. The whole company is predicated on exploiting the allocation rules to make move-ins to drive up the value of a certain license and then turn a profit by re-selling that license once the move-in is complete.

I knew that it was much more than a hunch...

...that this group would somehow form a family...

It's more than just a guess my little friend, radiotuner. In documents filed with the FCC, First Broadcasting was required to give notice that one of its board members is also a member of the Radio One board. They were required to show interest in any other broadcast outlets in the market.

You can find the documents by searching the FCC web site. I've seen them and read them, but I don't remember exactly where I found them.

How about "97.7...The Wave?"

By the way, I was in Kenwood today and the signal blows.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Oscar on 07/11/05 04:45 PM.</FONT></P>
