97.7 format change for the 4th of July?

Well, I actually did listen to WKAF almost exclusively during the first 3 to 6 Months when it first changed their format off the the simulcast of 107.3. Then even after that, I would occasionally tune in for a couple of tunes every now and then.

For whatever reason, Entercom decided that the frequency wasn't worth holding onto. Admittedly, I was surprised when Iheartradio flipped it's format too!

Then again, they do not see those who tune in as listeners, but rather potential customers from their advertisers instead!

Another great showing for 97.7's new format! A 1.3 share!!! Great job, iHeart! You've only managed to chase away more than one-half of the station's incumbent AQH listenership!

I said from the get-go that new format is a DUD and has shown ZERO longevity almost everywhere it's been tried. What a stupid, stupid programming move by iHM!!!

Yup, like I said before, a placement holder!

If it makes money they keep it; but who knows--(this could be far fetched but...)
WKAF 97.7 Hot New Country
WBWL "Newsradio 101.7" (not sure what they'd do with 1030; keep it as a simulcast and they lose a revenue stream). WBZ's powerful AM signal has kept Newsradio there for now.

101.7 was a placeholder itself with adult hits and EDM making way eventually for country. Moving the Bull would not be helpful for listeners north of Boston, though but maybe 97.7 still covers quite a bit.
People were speculating on twitter---Entercom could move WAAF to 103.3 and have 107.3 do a WEEI-FM simulcast...

I'm kinda surprised that the bull has staying power! Another idea is to simulcast The Bull on 97.7 as well, therefore covering both the North and South Shore! Heck, back in the day 40 years ago or so, 97.7 was WCAV and broadcasting Satellite Country at the time, so who knows?

Exchange WEEI-FM with WAAF? I do not see this likely for 2 reasons. I think that 'EEI wants a stronger signal in Boston, not less! Also, if the only hurdle with 'AAF was signal hurdle, then they wouldn't have dropped 97.7 from their simulcast to start with.

While I do like the all over the place format on WAAF, the simple fact of the matter is that the station needs to be much more targeted now, but especially with 2 other rock stations in town!

I think that WBZ will stay in place, but will eventually simulcast somewhere on the FM band as well.

If AM starts to disappear from the dashboard, it will absolutely have to, unless the entire audience "ages out" and renders WBZ completely unattractive to advertisers. At some point, one would hope, younger listeners start taking an interest in news and talk programming. Or are they getting all their news and opinion online now and are a lost cause for radio to attempt to engage?

People who don't live on the south shore forget that the 97.7 signal is not that great down here since moving to Great Blue Hill. The antenna is mounted on the north side of the large tower up there, and the signal just is not very strong to the south. I'd say it's a safe bet that the signal is better in Boston than it is in Brockton.

On paper, thats not possible.. not legal, but in real life, we know real life doesnt always match whats on "paper"

>>Exchange WEEI-FM with WAAF?

The idea wasn't to move WEEI-FM from 93.7 to 107.3...it was to simulcast WEEI-FM on both.

me:
>>and have 107.3 do a WEEI-FM simulcast...

As it is now, and yes only some people have HD, Entercom is putting WAAF on the HD2s of
WEEI-FM 93.7 and Mix 104.1

The next question would be if the expansion of WEEI's signal would make up for the loss of the WAAF revenue. I suspect the answer is no.

How about finally throwing the towel in on WJMN and move WBWL to 94.5. They could bring back the old morning show from WKLB to top it off. The big 94.5 signal is far better than both 101.7 and 97.7 combined.

The location of the antenna on the tower should not make that much difference. WHOM's antenna on Mt. Washington is on the south side of their tower facing Portland but one can still get their signal quite well north of Sherbrooke, Quebec.

actually, yes it can.. it all depends on the tower and the antenna, but if not placed on the top of the tower.. and side mounted, it can make a difference. stations have been known to side mount antennas to get the most they can in one direction, legally without changing licensed details. Now, for WHOM.. with that much pwoer and that much height, a side mounted antenna wont make much a difference inso much as if its facing the wrong direction.... it won't affect thigns too much... youre dealing with amazing terrain there

The size of WHOM’s tower compared to the size of their antenna is nothing compared to the large structure of the lower portion of the GBH tower that WKAF is on.
