97.9 FM To Hartford: And It Begins...

Surprised nobody's mentioned this yet but 100.9 WRNX is now simulcasting Kix 97.9 in anticipation of the latter signal moving from Springfield to Hartford.

One day last week in the 9 AM hour, Jim Reed on Kool 101 announced that they'd temporarily be leaving the air to make some "technical adjustments". I'm willing to bet it's related to this, as 100.9 just flipped to a simulcast of Kix 97.9 this week. (I know Jim lurks this board, perhaps he can share some thoughts.) There were actually a few occasions over the last several months that Kool temporarily left the air for similar reasons.

The initial interruptions were related to the antenna and coax installation. (New 2-bay Shively at the top...former 2-bay ERI main antenna slid down for use as Aux...older 4-bay ERI aux removed.) Transmitter installed (BE-10S). Subsequent interruption related to "cut-over" to new electrical system in the building and connections to generator etc... Beefier generator to be installed soon....existing unit going to a sister-station to replace a unit there. I'm told we're awaiting word on "test authority" and should be able to goose it to 6KW ERP then. Probably leave the air for a short time when new generator hooked up--but don't know when.

100.9 in Springfield is going a little slower due to reasons that I can't discuss here, 100.9 in New London won't be able to apply for PTA until the 100.9 in Springfield does, as a condition of the construction permit. (They both have to file at the same time.)

It's moving along, and we'll see them change in the nearish future.

To make a long story short...will I be able to receive a hint of signal from either station here in New Britain, once they're both upgraded? Presently, I don't receive a bit of either station. On a side note, I can only get the present WPKX-FM 97.9 as a weak and noisy stereo signal at best.

@Marcb: That's an interesting observation - one CC country station is better than another CC country station - because it confirms that at least one of them isn't being outsourced to Premium Choice... ::)

@Jim (Freightliner): knew I could count on you for some info, and thanks for it!

It's going to be atop City Place in Hartford, across from the XL Center. I'd gather they'd have to null their new pattern to the southeast to protect WCTY-FM 97.7 of Norwich. (Their transmitter is fairly close to the Mohegan Sun property in Montville.)

The 97.9 in Hartford has to protect three stations.

1) 1st Adjacent WCTY
2) Co Channel WSKQ
3) 3rd Adjacent WZBG

So the pattern puts very little power south of Hartford, and most of it to the north.

The ERI will be on the top of City Place, as mentioned.

Marc, how well can you hear 105.5? The signal will be relatively identical to 105.5's signal when constructed.

I just find it funny that the two frequencies involved in all of this are both adjacents to two Hall stations in New London.

(cue the "All In The Family" theme ;) )

Joe, it's also adjacent to one more Hall Station, though it probably won't have as much of an effect on "Cat Country 98.1" New Bedford.

None at all, I would imagine. I'm in Meriden and I can't get 98.1 or 97.7 at all, and 105.5 only faintly.

Gotta love how you think of them before second adjacent WILI-FM in Willimantic. We do exist..

And what part of your coverage area would a signal from Hartford two channels away with deep nulls to the east and south affect?

The null is to the southeast, with a healthy ol' lobe aimed right through the heart of Tolland County and toward Windham County. The 60 dBu covers parts of Tolland County, the back yard of WILI-FM. There may not be much noticable interference, but it wouldn't be unheard of if there were. It's certainly not helping anyone's cause that isn't Clear Channel.

Joe, I for one don't care if the DJ is sitting locally in the studio in Springfield (or in the case of WWYZ - Hartford) or if he/she is VT'd locally or from Premium Choice. The reason I prefer KIX over WWYZ is because they have a bigger play list. They play more "older" Country music than WWYZ does and they go back further back than WWYZ does.

OK I finally re-read the engineering exhibit filed with the application.

Here is the Bottom Line

WPKX app is -0.24kM short to WCTY, and -0.27 short to WSKQ. And that is it.

No other short spacings exist for this application

WZBG (which I was wrong about), WKZE-FM, WILI-FM, are ALL CLEAR from this application.

So there ya go. It has a null towards WCTY at 54.5% power, and a null towards WSKQ which is 36.8% power.
