97.9 KXAF

Got to listen to this station today. All of the observations are pretty accurate - the playlist is enjoyable as an 80's music nerd, but is extremely obscure... case in point - a twangy bluegrass version of "The Valley Road" instead of the Bruce Hornsby original. The sound quality is also terrible; some songs sound fine (The Valley Road), most sound like the song is playing with the mic left on, and some are so quiet that the song can barely be made out (Ray Parker Jr., "The Other Woman).

To top it all off, the station never Legal ID'd, but it did do a memorable bottom of the hour ID.

"Thanks for listening to KXAF, 97 point ONE, The Fax Machine!"

97.1? Or 97.9? If you really mean the former, LMFAO.

That's as bad the station in Arkansas that used to call itself "97 Country" despite being on 96.1! Actually, it may be worse because the station in Arkansas was at least on 96.7 for several years, when it first started calling itself "97 Country."

In Regards to Hispanic Target Media not all stations streaming yet especially the new ones They are working on getting the kinks out Radioamigo out of Yuma has a webpage you can listen , Radio Amigo in Roswell Streams live.str3am.com2830 I believe Perry Florida station streams live .str3am.com2980, Perhaps the Zapata station live.str3am.com2700 I do not believe Exmore Virginia ,Rankin Texas , George West I and II or the new San Diego Texas or Refugio Texas none of those are streaming yet ..KXAF ..XAF = FAX

Okay, I've fixed your links to work properly. Thanks for that. Last one I can't get to work though.

Curious as to how you got your info? Do you have connections inside the company? I couldn't find anything for the stations and whether they stream or not when I googled.

If you can please tell KXAF to fix their liner to give out the right number!
Thanks.

I guess you could say I have inside connections in the company , I brought it to the President of the Company's attention about the Frequency error it should be corrected tomorrow. Like I said they are just ironing out the kinks 97.9 is brand new as well as San Diego KXAM 102.5 They have had some employee issues at 100.5 and Bronco KGWT They are hoping to get those on track as well

Nice.

One other suggestion - make sure the identifications give out the call letters + the cities of licenses. My guess is the people behind the recorded messages don't much get what a legal ID is, from listening to some of that company's stations.
"KGWT-FM, George West TX), (KRIK-FM, Refugio TX), (KXAF-FM, George West TX) etc.

Well remember when KHHL first came on the air (former KTXX) They were Rhythmic for about 3 months then changed to Spanish.

Has the Fax Machine been taken out of service?

Passing through George West today, I tuned in with the hope of hearing some extreme 80's variety, but instead heard Spanish ballads, Spanish pop songs, and "Baby" by Justin Bieber. The songs were all introduced (in Spanish) by a male and female voice, but they didn't seem to give away a station name or anything of the sort. Nor was the frequency ever named, so I can't confirm that they have figured out that the station isn't 97.1, either.

Sounds like what happened to KRIK. Was it similar to this?

And 93.5, were you able to tune in and see if it was still country?

Judging by that aircheck, KRIK is playing a lot more regional Mexican-type music. KXAF didn't play any such songs that I recall, and played Spanish pop instead. And either the man or the woman (both of whom sounded pre-recorded) spoke before every song, but never over the music, IIRC.

I recorded some of what I heard on KXAF; will try to upload it ASAP.

Yes, 93.5 is still country.

Thanks. Can you please get it up soon? I'm curious as to what it sounds like. I picked it up for a couple minutes here one night but it was just dead air with this rather quiet buzzing noise.

Well, I picked up KXAF from over here for a few minutes last night...
It still doesn't announce the station at all (at least it didn't when I tuned in).
I only heard a few songs played, some were Spanish pop but most were regional Mexican. The music player used seemed rather simple, no crossfading or compression.

I know it's late but was it this one? http://www.last.fm/music/The+Nitty+Gritty+Dirt+Band/_/The+Valley+Road - Must be really obscure, can't find it on YouTube.

Yes, that was it!

I have finally uploaded my clips of KXAF, if you're interested. Quality is pretty poor - they're recorded from my phone, sitting in the passenger seat of my car while driving down the not-so-smooth roads in the George West area, but it can give you an idea of the playlist. In any case...

http://www.mediafire.com/?53g2tq2sn4o922s - This is KXAF on April 6, when the station had flipped from the obscure 80's format to an obscure Spanish/English pop hybrid.

http://www.mediafire.com/?lqh9osh4as3ay3h - This is KXAF on April 12, when the station had flipped from the obscure Spanish/English pop hybrid to a more mainstream 80's format. This was extremely short lived - a few days later when I passed through, the station was silent; every time since, the station has been back to the Spanish/English pop hybrid.

No imaging since it flipped from the obscure 80's format to the Spanish / English pop hybrid? Didn't hear the 97.1 Fax Machine ID.
Also, the new 80's format sounded better, songs sounded normal from what I heard, no quiet songs / songs with the mic left on.

Didn't get to record the "Fax Machine" ID. I've tuned into KXAF at least five or six times (every time I drive through George West, since the station has signed on), but that single ID was the only time I've ever heard the station ID in any form. I've never heard a commercial, either.

And yes, all-80's 2.0 sounded good... I guess the president really likes Phil Collins since it played two in a row. Maybe HTM's best sounding station! Sadly, I don't think it was given more than a few days of airtime.

Well, perhaps the company'll see this message and bring it back. :)

And I won't neglect to mention that Bronco 93 isn't bad either. Yeah their country's a bit on the honky-tonk / local artist side, but it's a good music selection. If only they'd make an adjustment to their audio quality...

KXAF is broadcasting silence again, the antenna's on but no music or audio or anything is coming through the signal. I wonder how many days this has been happening for... Yawn.
