970/99.1 now classic hip-hop

After stunting a few days with a continuous loop of a Mary Mary song, the station is now classic hip-hop. As someone who grew up on this kind of music, I'm digging it!

Well if they are expecting anyone east of pearl to listen, they need to fix 970. The level is so low you can barely hear it above the static. They cranked up the bass but its too boomy. I doubt many people will listen on AM but 970 can be heard in many areas that the 99 watt FM can't be heard. Assuming that the AM station is actually set up correctly. Which it is not, and hasn't been for a while. The old hip hop might be cool for a while, but I"m going to miss the classic country.

Just listened to the AM a few minutes ago. Doesn't sound that bad. I can barely get the FM where I live and only on a car radio. AM still needs some work. Used to come in good at my location even at night. Now its almost impossible to hear. The old skool might work, but there is only so much old stuff to pick from unless they throw in a few album cuts , long versions or remixes to pad out the format.

Funny thing. there used to be someone named Jeff Steele working there when it was WRKN/Gospel 97. He went into the gospel music business and the last I heard he was pastoring a church. I wonder if old Roy Harris would roll over in his grave if he knew WRJH and WRKN would eventually end up playing hip hop.

I constructed WRJH in the early 70's...so I knew Roy and June very well...and spin Roy would...sad how things change....JBI

I'm not sure if June Harris is still around but I used to see her in Walmart occasionally. If she is, she's probally not hurting too bad. I've heard that 97.7 went for 1.6 million when On Top bought it. Which is a lot of money for a 6000 watt station. Not sure what they got for 970 but it probally went pretty cheap. BTW. who is running 970 now. I assume it's not Rainey Radio anymore. It's changed formats/management several times since being sold.

I'm not related to that Jeff Steele.

The sad fact is...when you exit the work that you have dedicated to your operation for many years to be successful...is often discarded by a new owner with a "Vision"...and many times it leads to total destruction of the operation. That is one of the problems faced by the remaining few independent operations in Mississippi....including mine. I hope I have evaded that problem, but as the old saying goes : "Ultimately, nothing matters!"....JBI

What a coincidence: both stations (although no longer sister stations) playing hip-hop!

WRJH
WRBJ (97-7): urban contemporary

WRKN (Gospel 97)
WZQK (Real Country 970)
WJFN (970 The Fan)
WFYQ (B-Day 970)

If you like Classic Jams (Hip-Hop)... float on over to our website... www.yo1071.com

I, too, remember Lakeside, Carl Carlton, etc.. on WJMI in the early 80s.... you might hear some of that influence there.

There was a 2 live crew "song" called "It's your Birthday" years ago, but I doubt that had anything to do with it. Speaking of that i recently heard "Me So Horny" by 2 Live Crew on 970 (ex WRKN Gospel 97). I can definitely hear Roy Harris spinning in his grave. Maybe they should have a rap concert under the 3 legged water tank in good ole Polkville. (only an old WRKN listener would get that reference)

Yep... I recarted that White's Grocery and Cafe spot a few times myself! Don't forget the Hill Mattress spot that Roy sang... recarted that one once or twice. I don't know if they saved any of Roy's spots when Ms June sold the stations, but I hope so.

Things change... and not always for the better...

I remember hearing those commercials with Roy Harris for years after he had died. some of the tapes sounded worn out or either the heads were dirty on the machine. I used to get a kick out of hearing June Harris talk on the air. Her accent made anything she said even funnier. Several years ago I heard her talking to someone in Walmart from across the store. I never new the lady but I'd recognize that voice anywhere. She seemed like a very nice lady.
