Has 970 been sold? If so to whom?

And what will become of the programming currently on 970?

KIXL has indeed been sold. A local (Austin) group sold the station in July to the Starboard Media Foundation of Green Bay, Wi. Starboard runs the Catholic "RelevantRadio" network (see relevantradio.com).

My understanding is that the current station will be "blown-up" and the RelevantRadio network will be put on 970. As far as the current programming and staff, who knows. About a month or so ago I heard Jim Wagner (the afternoon host) talking about the sale. Apparently, they are looking for another frequency for the programming.

I am very familiar with the Austin market, and quite frankly there is not really anything left to buy that has full coverage (or even 3/4 market coverage).

1060 KFIT is the only station on AM that is not owned by a out-of-town conglomerate. KFIT's signal is horrible and the programming is mostly black gospel and spanish.

The situation on the FM band is even more dismal.

Well, that will be a real change after 29 years of more or less the same religious format.

Previous calls/formats on 970:
KASE Standards/MOR 1959-64
KHFI Standards/MOR 1964-69
KTAP Top 40 1969-73
KTAP Progressive 1973-74
KIXL Standards/MOR 1974-75
KIXL Oldies 1975-76

KIXL covers the city, but not much else. It is fading by the time I hit Round Rock to the north or Buda to the south.

And about a week ago, I heard from another employee that they were getting close to getting arrangements finalized for their programming to move to a new FM frequency. This employee refused to say which frequency it was but did say it was not displacing any existing station.

Perhaps the permanent format on the new 99.3?

That sure seems like the only possibility. There really is no other new FM stations. Even if you go a county over in all directions.

The new 95.9 in Giddings is about the only thing else even on the radar and that station won't find an owner or be on the air until after the FCC auction in January.

How's that going to work with KAOS still pirating on 95.9?
