970 WFLA: Dan Ruth - Canceled!

Wow, I just heard Jeff Fisher announce that Dan Ruth, well-known Tampa Tribune columnist and better known Bush-hater is being replaced on Saturday mornings by a weekend version of AM Tampa Bay 9-11am after Captain Mel 6-9am. The Mutual Fund show apparently moves to 11am and Cigar Dave is live again 12-2pm. Oh, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck weekends move to Saturday afternoons, from Sunday.

Speaking of Sunday...The Florida Gardening show moves 7-9am Sunday and a talk-show with "Jesus Christ" himself in the title comes on board 9-noon. I think that's about all I remember, except that Leo Laporte goes "live" 2-6pm or something. And a few other new programs join the line-up, while leaving Bill Cunningham right where he is 10pm-1am. Sorry, When Jeffie's yappin' (or in a grocery aisle) he's hard to miss.

That's a shame... I liked his Jazz bumper music. He is the kind of guy Air America needed. A real radio guy that got into the newspaper biz.

I'm surprised that WFLA kept him on the air as long as they did, since he didn't fit in with all their other political pundits.

I seldom listen to WFLA, but did manage to catch Ruth's show about once or twice a month.

Hopefully their weekend Tampa Bay show will be worthwhile for those still listening to 970 on the weekend, as the rest of their weekend programming seems to be leftovers/reruns from the week or mediocre talk at best.

Click and Clack, still have my vote from the 10 - 11 am hour, on WUSF fm.

Thank heaven! 970 has finally achieved uniformity of perspective -- realizing how well that has served stations like WGUL and WWBA. Liberalism is truly dead! ;D

A talk show with Jesus Christ you say? I wonder if it's local. KFI 640 in LA has "The Jesus Christ Show" which originates from KFI, and it's conveniently from 6-9 AM Pacific. Hmm.

Its too bad they are dropping Ruth. Change is inevitable in radio but Ruth did allow a small platform each week for some liberal points of view. I have to think it's more a budget move. Another live person eliminated from the weekend WFLA roster. I doubt Ruth was making any real significant money, but any savings is a savings. So now they will overwork Train Wreck Fisher. That was a trainwreck I heard this past Sunday on the Fisher Files....wasn't it? A gabfest about ice cream and fat. Nice. I think he had 2 calls. And the way he talked all over the top of a promo was superb, professional.......real quality air work. There is one listener for sure who loves Jeff.....that's Jeff!

That's my Jeff Fisher rant for the year.

Have a nice day.

Well, the same thing happened to Mark Beiro last year. Both Ruth and Beiro offered something different to FLA's ordinary schedule, and it's a shame they are now gone.

But does this also mean Tony Fatso's "On the Grill" is over since reruns will be airing on Saturday afternoon? And who will be doing the weekend version of AM Tampa Bay?

I heard Beiro this morning on WWBA during the news. He was the spokesman for the Hillsborough county Democratic party.

Make that two listeners. Fisher is a breath of fresh air compared to everything that's on M-F.

Was listening this morning around 10:30 and I heard a promo for Dan Ruth's show. Assuming it wasn't an accident ... so what's really going on? Anyone know?

Sorry to disappoint you, but expect some new programming on Saturday nights (starting at the end of the month if all goes as planned) that will be anything but uniform.

With what CC has done to that station, the only way they will regain my trust and loyal listenership is if they resurrect Bob Lassiter.

I'm not going to hold my breath.

Yup. More local show cancellations. All for the almighty dollar.

Just what NT needs.

I'm sure that other host who always chimes in and chastises me for my views on this wasted signal will again attack me and claim this is a good move.

That is, until he discovers the local spots they canned could have been filled by a local host such as himself.

I don't know if you are talking about me or not... but, this gripe is a legit one while your whining about WFLA almost killing you and your wife is a whole 'nother story.

Has anyone heard how Big Daddy Don Richards is doing?

I am praying for good news.

Was watching WFLA-Channel 8 last week ... they were doing a 10-year retrospective on the Hank Earl Carr saga, and they did a "Where Are They Now?" segment on some of the key players in the day's events. (As you'll recall, Don interviewed Carr by telephone while he was holed up in the gas station with the hostage.)

According to Channel 8, Don is "retired from radio."

I will miss his stimulating input, command of the English language, topical news expertise and his ability to talk with people who had many different political philosophies. He was a ray of sunshine on your station who has now been eclipsed.
