I think if they really wanted to give 97X a stronger signal they should swap it with The Eagle. What do you guys think? 107X? Just an idea.

The idea of a swap for 97X is good, but not the swap you said.

No, do not mess with 107.3, they've done well, you don't want to mess with that. What else could be done ? How about 97X to 101.5, 101.5 to 102.5 and something new on 97.1 (yeah, I know.....we probably would have to keep THE BONE on 97.1, oh well)

has the time come for this yet? I'd say heck yes.

Great idea, bit I doubt it will ever happen. Cox would have to spend money changing the tv commercial for "Tampa Bay's Newest Radio Station, IS...107.3-The Eagle."

How long has 107.3 The Bay been gone? 3 years, 4 years...longer? Cracks me up every time I hear it. But I suppose that perception is reality for the focus groups we all live by.

I think Cox needs to seriously think about this because 98Rock is a huge rock station in our area and I know 97X does pretty good against them but 97X needs some more power and either upgrade the transmitter or give them a better signal. My idea is, that maybe The Point and 97X switch? But 101.5 does good and im guessing The Bone does as well. Im not sure but 97X needs more juice and soon.

Because 11,500 Watts isnt good if you want to take down the rock empire 98Rock.

If they were gonna do it they would have done it a long long time ago. First it was when The Bay and the New 102-5 were suckin big time... and they still didn't do it. Then it was when "The Point" was wavering a bit.... nope. And when Bubba got fired... 98 Rock was ripe for the pickin... NOPE. I've always been a firm believer that X on another stick would garner at least another share or two. But I guess their "hot zip research" doesn't show the same results as mine. I'm guessing there must be a lot of 18-34 year old males and advertisers in Pasco County worth keeping it on 97.1.... Yeah... that's it, forget about south Tampa, Brandon, and St. Petersburg. Let's keep our kick ass alternative rock format, that's had a golden opportunity in the last 2 years to knock off market's heritage rock station, on the same tower with 1/10th the power. Geez... the brains at Cox never cease to amaze me.

Ironically, 97X and 98 Rock are on the same tower in Holiday.

Also, 105.5 and 107.3 are on that tower too.

I knew 107.3 had a CP to move there... waaay up that tower, but when did they move? I thought they were still on one of those three sticks behind the flea market in Oldsmar.

I thought they had moved because I was up in Citrus County and they had a very strong signal. But you are correct, I don't know if they've moved or not as it is still showing as a CP.

The Bay News 9 ENG RX is also on that "98 Rock" tower.

I know it well...

My guess is Cox sees 97X as a success on the pea shooter, where another non-unique format might fail. As a good chunk of 97X's playlist can't be heard elsewhere, people don't mind the less than stellar signal.

But I can't help but think moving the format to 102.5 could be a huge thorn in Clear Channel's side. Not only might it be enough to pull them ahead of 98 Rock once and for all, it would completely destroy Sarasota's WTZB. Heck, it might even draw a few out of market ears away from Beasley's 99X Ft. Myers...

Scenario 2 could be combining The Eagle and The Bone into a mainstream classic rocker on 102.5 and moving the X to 107.3.

As for 97.1...the only other use I can figure would be a Country format aimed at Pasco County (where the signal is actually quite good), but there is far too much competition in that arena, or a Spanish language format. However, logistically, the current 97X is probably the only way for Cox to get ratings out of that signal.

X101.5

97X would probably be better on 101.5. 97.1 may be better off as an Urban AC. SJT has added a lot of Classic Soul and their ratings are kicking A**. Unfortunately the signal (97.1) does not hit S. St. Pete as well as I would like it but it does cover metro Tampa.

Country is basically taken.

When 107.3 calls itself "new" it's ridiculous, but "new" is a relative term so it's no big deal. But when they refer to themselves as Tampa Bay's "newest" radio station (as they're doing on recent tv commercials)... that's an outright lie and needs to be stopped. It's a false claim by all objective standards.

I noticed that on the last day of Outlaw 92.5's broadcast, they were still using sweepers that touted them as "The new Outlaw ninety-two-five". The next day, WYUU was called "La Nueva" ("the new one" in Spanish). I guess when you call yourself La Nueva, you will always be new.

I agree with the false advertising claim. I've thought the same thing when I heard it. There have been numerous format flips around here since 107.3 became "The Eagle", but who was the last Tampa Bay area station to power up their transmitter for the first time? That station would have to be recognised as "Tampa Bay's newest radio station".

Good question. On FM, I'm guessing it would have to be 98.7, licensed to Holmes Beach, which first fired up the transmitter sometime around 1991. Of course they began as WAYP and later WISP serving only the Sarasota-Bradenton market.

I can't think of anything more recent on FM. As for AM, I've lost track of all those little rinky-dink signals, so I don't know.

I believe the wewest major FM would be 97.1.
Newest low power/translator would be 95.3 Pinellas Park
