97X Needs more power

Now that 98.7 and 94.1 have done a smart move in swapping freqs to better match where there audiences are, why don't 97x and 101.5 do the same? The X usually beats 101.5 with a tenth of the power and a large chunk of the audience (east of Lakeland to St. Pete) do not have access to the station. Wouldn't it improve revenues if 97X could stomp WXTB in the demos? They could possibly own the male 18-34 demos.

Not too long ago there was call to swap 97.1 with 102.5. Now that "The Bone" is out of the basement...101.5 would be the logical choice.

However I'm pretty sure (the way Cox sees it) 97X at this point exists to protect 102.5 by taking listeners away from 98 Rock. Also it does pretty well (perhaps out-performs) given it's signal limitations, probably the best use of that small signal.

As for 101.5...I wouldn't be surprised to see a format change instead of a swap (Variety Hits, anyone?). Personally, I think the current 80's format has legs (ZZ Top, yes...but unfortunately no Art Of Noise), if only Cox would widen the playlist (right now it's stale-city).

The only other formats that would make sense on 97.1 would be 50's-60's Oldies or some flavor of Country (esp. given the signals Pasco/Hernando bias)...since this market has Country pretty much covered, that would be a non-starter.

I agree that some kind of move could, maybe should be made.

I continue to suggest 105.5 is the place.

Yeah, 12+ bragging rights, but i'm always told that does NOT in any way translate to any bragging rights for the revenue.....in fact, the opposite possibly.

least revenue and least future hope to change that should be the smallest signal.

not saying that WDUV is in fact ''the least'' ....but if it is.......should be natural.

Second......what station is WDUV really head to head with ?

97X is head to head with 98 rock, correct ? 98 Rock has the signal advantage, correct ? Leaving 97X in need of a boost.......

105.5 on the same tower, w 50k.............

make it happen.

The formats with the best chance for success on smaller signals are those with loyal followings. If you put 101.5 on 97.1's smaller signal it would just be gone, it's just another AC. Same theory as what's behind putting WSJT on 98.7, those who still want to hear it will go and find it.

If they were to move 97X they would need to replace it with maybe a liberal talk format or something along those lines, and dump whatever was on the other frequency entirely.

and while the Dove doesn't have huge revenues, it costs virtually nothing so it's pure profit and not going anywhere.

In this market... WDUV is not going anywhere. Parttimer is spot on with the loyal follower theory. However, I do agree that if X was moved to 101.5, they'd absolutely increase their numbers. A music intensive "X" paired with Bubba and Cowhead on 102 vs. Lex and Terry, Love Lines, and a classic/newrock mix on 98 means WXTB doesn't stand a chance.

As far as what to do with 97.1... I've always said an Urban A/C like Star 94 Orlando would work here. However, with WTMP and 95.7 already somewhat serving that audience I'm not so sure it would work on the North of the metro based 97.1. Maybe they could drive WTMP outta business but I don't think The Beat is going anywhere. Safer bet would be an automated pop hits station or maybe even an UNstaffed talk station with the Cox programs originating from Atlanta... and actually cleared LIVE (Boortz and Howard).

The best format for 101.5 is FM Talk Radio with possibly an alternative music schedule on the weekends. There is NO FM Talk station in Tampa Bay, and FM Talk is an "up and coming" format. All the music FM's are all recycling the same song playlist, so FM Talk would be a refreshing change, filling an existing void, in an otherwise oversaturated FM music market.

As for 97.1, they already had a winning format with the niche adult standards prior to the switch to oldies and finally to alternative as 97X. They should revisit that option should the "X" find a new home.

And finally, as for a new home for WSUN-FM, The "X" would be a better fit on WXGL 107.3's 100kw signal, replacing the tired classic rock/classic hits format currently heard on "The Eagle".

Other than hiring Bubba, Cox seems to avoid any changes . I would seriously expect nothing to happen along any of these lines. I bet if you came back in ten years all the Cox properties would be the same and all using "new" as a promo. Sorry

Cox Radio does flip formats and tweak stations from time-to-time as is the case with Cox Jacksnoville WMXQ-FM 102.9 All '80s "The Point" recently flipping to Alternative Rock WXXJ.

On another note, CBS recently moving lower rated Smooth Jazz WSJT to the 50kw 98.7 dial position and relocating higher rated WILD to the 94.1 frequency should be a good move improving ratings and overall billing for WLLD in the Tampa Bay market...

Inexplicably, The "New" Eagle has been on the upswing as of late (if this keeps up, I wouldn't be surprised if Clear Channel gets back into the Classic Rock game at 97.9). I doubt Cox would mess with 107.3 at this point.

On WXXJ....Cox must be doing OK with 97X, as the J'Ville station is pretty much a clone.

97X changing signals would be probably a good thing. I agree with you guys. Their ratings been pretty bad with 98Rock..maybe a signal relocation would be good.
Everyone knows already how I feel about 98Rock... they been alittle better over the past few months since fighting more with 102.5 then 97x.... I still feel and always feel that they should play more of a Active Rock format instead of mixing it with Modern Rock... and play 80s Recognizable music to compete more with 102.5 (if thats who they are competing against) instead of the overplayed 90s. I would love to hear 1-2 hairbands a hour mixing in with 1-2 more newer Active Rock. New Rock Songs that are released and Recognizable 80s early 90s rock/hair/metal will bring over more listeners from 102.5,970am (peeps in their 30s-40s that listen to talk radio cause there is no good hard rock stations) and probably even some from 97x cause 98Rock will keep up the New Rock.
