97X Remote Control

Listener controlled local FM radio is nothing new. Jelli 96.7 in Las Vegas has been doing it 24/7 for over 2 years. Just a thought... Why on earth would I use my smartphone to vote for songs against thousands of other listeners when I can control "my own radio station" with apps like Pandora, Slacker, and Spotify? Nice try 97X... you're late and not original; but I'm sure a few listeners will fall for it. In all honesty though, if this was gonna be tried on any signal in Tampa Bay, 97.1 is the one for it.

Well, it will be a great way.to have an excuse to play the same handful of songs.to death. No more new songs unless 98 Rock breaks them first.

I'm a big fan of the station, but I liked the morning show, wish that would have stayed.

I'm now curious how The Bone lineup will be altered to fit Drew's extra hour. Why wouldn't they announce the Bone's moves the same day?

Okay, decided to finally tune in, as I'm always looking for a decent modern rock station that plays more than the typical Red Sublime Mumford Fighters. First time I pulled it up on the TuneIn app, they're playing "Limelight" by Rush. Did I have the right station? Did Cox accidentally switch streams? Couldn't tell, since I got a call and had to shut it down. Pulled it up later and it's "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. Okay, probably a Cox screwup, but I'll stay tuned to see what's going on. Next song is Sonic Youth. Okay, that's more like it. And a band that, for some ridiculous reason, alt-rock radio completely ignores. Okay, perhaps I do have the right station. Akso threw in They Might Be Giants and now, P.J. Harvey, as I type this (another one you don't hear everyday).

All in all, looks like a gimmick, mixing in a lot of the same old retreads and a few off the wall tunes. But modern rock and the "Jack"-style format are a pretty good combination in general. And Alt-rock radio stations should be a bit irreverant and unpredictable. Too bad most of them have essentially become Top 40 stations with different songs. And I do hope it's not an excuse to blow out all their air talents. I know they're getting beat up on pretty bad on their Facebook page for that.

Again, glad I got out of this business years ago... so ridiculous. Let's fire our entire on-air staff and automate the entire thing. Put some half-ass webpage / app in charge of it.

Been listening over past 4 days and this is just dumb. Hell music from WXGL's library has been getting excessive airplay on there, including "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Why did the station leave the choice up to listeners, I'm all into listener requests but this is too far. These people keep picking the same songs. Plus with all these older songs getting repeated that is not leaving much room for "NEW MUSIC". Why do people insist on repeating tired old tracks. 1,800 songs (including songs not heard much on radio) and only 200-300 being played max. I WANT NEW MUSIC!

The only reason 97X was not all mighty in the ratings is its signal. Which considering its signal actually does quite well. People listen to 97X for Fisher Boy, Morning X, Sunday School and Tasty Flesh, All programs that involve interacting with listeners, all shows that involve DJ's.

98Rock is soon going to rise up in the ratings due to all the pissed off X fans. Which would be more of a reason for 98 to refine their playlist, toplay more new rock and less Boston.

Been reading 97x's Facebook Page and a lot of 97x's listeners would listen to Spotify and Pandora if not for "The Morning X", Fisher Boy and the other DJ's. This is why WDUV and The Eagle run jockless and 97x and Hot 101.5 have personalities. 97x listeners will exercise their options and not listen to radio if not for personalities. Since The Dove and The Eagle have older demos their listeners would still stick to them regardless, especially if they are not hip on technology. Still a shame The Dove has no personality other than Ann Kelley but what can I say.

soft AC used to be personality driven with jingles and everything. When WDUV music was new, those stations had personality. I PREFER Q105 cause they sound like radio did when I could stay up all night without passing out on top of the cats

But cats are so comfortable...

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

Having finally gotten an alternative station in Greenville, SC (and one that's pretty decent overall) I hope Cox never pulls this crap with our X98.5. The reason I want an alternative station IS to hear new music. And if that's gone, well, I'd be gone too.

If this is truly completely user driven and there's only a handful of listeners that REALLY participate....yeah, it's not going to work regardless of format.
