Any word on a signal upgrade? Or is this as good as it gets?

Under current FCC minimum FM spacing rules the existing signal is "as good as it gets". An upgrade to the next class - C1 - is not possible due to a short-spacing conflict with first adjacent WINK-FM 96.9 C Fort Myers.

Thanks Mark. Can you summerize how short spacing works? I'm confused as to why there are so many stations cluttering the FM dial all over the country, yet so many are on the annoying low power end.

http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/audio/spacing/index.html

Here's the official chart from the FCC. A C2 (97.1)to a C(96.9)can be no closer than 188 Kilometers - That's why 97x is in Holiday and 96.9 is on the farm near Ft. Myers. Before the current rules were adopted, stations were closer that this and were grandfathered in. Classic examples include 100.3; 101.1 in NY and Philadelphia - both Class B's.

Based on the current rules, stations with lower power class A or C3's have been "shoe-horned" in to meet the spacing requirements. E.g. like 97.1 Also, in the late 80's the old Class C stations were given a mandate to upgrade their facilities to 300 meters @100kw minimum. Those that didn't were downgraded to C1 (like Q-105 and WQYK) which allowed other stations on those frequencies.

Hope this helps.

...nothing irritates me more than being in Brandon and hearing "santeria" for the gazillionth time on a less-than clear signal ::)

Seriously tho, there is SO much music they could infuse that station with from the same era (late 80s-early 90s) that its literally painful when you hear the same (admittedly, great in smaller doses) tunes multiple times daily. I know nothing about radio programming, but i have to believe even the airstaff is like "Really? again?"

Love Morning X, and genuinely listen to them based on their personalities and chemistry, but I am quick to jump to WILD during most music.

The irony of the timing of that post! The Morning X is disbanded, the station is jockless, and 97x is being controlled by a remote!

Does this mean a flip? Did the airstaff go to the Dove?

Jockless equals souless. I used to listen 97X often. This station can now have a million song playlist and, since it ia all request you will only hear thirty of the most overplayed songs. Just like any call in midday rdquest show. The X will have a different format in a few months. Maybe old achool.

I personally never listened cause I'm too old and dull for that music, so I would look forward to a flip to Urban AC and Urban Old School like 94.5 in Orlando or KBLX in SanFran

Yeah, I heard "Love Song" by The Cure 4 times today. Great song but that is pounding it to death. Same with Modest Mouse and Bob Marley's "Three little bird's".

This is not gonna work. 1.800 songs but only so many of them getting played. I would however love an old school alternative format. Without the burnout of listeners picking the same songs over and over.

The idiots who run radio now are apparently clueless to the fact that hosts / personalities are why people listen to the radio.

It's not the music, it's not the advertising, it's the personalities and content they bring.

Otherwise, they would listen to their ipad and not have to listen to the same 5-6 commercials running 50 times a day.

This sounds like a bar room juke box of sorts: You download an app and at $1/credit, you spend the credits on the juke box in the corner of the room.

"Juke box radio" has never worked. "Club DJ radio" has worked to translate successfully to radio because of the DJ's ability to see a mixture of songs and not repeat ability within 20 minutes of each play. The Club DJ also has the ability to track the audience's interest - alcohol notwithstanding, of course.

A human works every time it's tried.

I do not understand what managers are taught today. If Cox Tampa has MBAs running the opsragion, thsy then clearly missed the lectures regarding human behavior and basic marketing. People expect certain products and services at different venjes. For example, customers do not expect to buy a flu shot at a restaurant. The flu ahots would be consumed by a small share of restauranteurs. However, the fish could sell quite well. Hence, a jogger who is interested in keeping time will tend to choose to choose an ipod playlist to keep in time without commercial interruption. A student that is studying for an exam may also do the same because the music is strictly.background noise. Active listening, like FM, which is done mostly in our daily commute begs for a simulated shared experience. The listener wants somebody.with similar.music taste to ride.with them, share local traffic, weathwr, and events. The jukebox cannot fulfill this as it does not matter whether it is the afternoon or late evening. This decision was purely created to cut costs, damn the folks in Tampa. The rscently imported manager will be long gone in a year and will forever the Bay area because of his lack of success. But, oh boy, this next quarter will be great!

Of course. And quarter over quarter, the budget will look GREAT! And I am sure this guy will get some big bonuses. But when the ratings end up LOWER than they are now, they will move him around to destroy another market.

You ever notice how these guys at the top never lose their jobs, they just get moved around.

Hell, even the PD's never seem to lose their job. It's why people like Mike Pepper seem to still have a job.

Amen. And particularly - people connect with local hosts / personalities.
