98.1/102.7 Outside of Target Markets?

It's sort of relevant to my original topic, but it's another iHeart90's Weekend on 98.1 WKDD this weekend! As is the status quo with any major holiday where the offices are closed, they've shifted into iHeart90's mode for Labor Day. I'd expect the next one to happen with Thanksgiving, although that might be when/if they switch to all Christmas music.

New Year's Day is definitely another one, and I think Easter is the next one after that, followed by Memorial Day and July 4th, so that's, what, six times a year they do it?
And they dumped the talk on WHLO and went back to music for the holiday weekend. It warms the cockles of my heart to hear music on 640 AM again......even if it's only for the weekend.

AGREED. I used to listen to their weekly countdown show in the 1969-1973 era. I remember Todd "Turkey" Taylor being the host. I'm sure they'll only play big, booming hits, but I would love to hear the following songs that I heard ONLY on WHLO:

THE BELLS: "(I Love You) Lady Dawn" (1971)... The follow-up single to their national Top 10 hit "Stay Awhile". I like "Lady Dawn" better than "Stay Awhile". It's similar.

TOMMY ROE: WHLO would choose one new song a week as a "Pick Hit" (predicted hit). "Pistol Legged Mama" (1971) was one of those. This low-charting, "Bubbling Under" the Billboard Hot 100, was a "Pick Hit". I never saw a copy in a store and only in the 1990s did my brother find a promo copy from a dealer in Canada. It was a U.S. pressing.

LARRY SANDERS: "Child of December" (1971-1972). This was an exciting local record WHLO decided to play in regular rotation.
This soft rock song was released on the Stone Head record label which was located in Mansfield, Ohio. I always liked this song. Somewhere along the line, I ran into a good quality promo copy which also had its B-side of "Fate". "Child of December" was also heard on the Climax (Sonny Geraci) album that featured "Precious and Few".

And then there's this:
I had/have a very small AM only battery operated radio. I used to take it with me to school, and if the opportunity presented itself, I'd hide it in my jacket on the desk and listen to the WHLO Top 40 countdown which began at 3 p.m. on a weekday. By 3 p.m. the school day was winding down, and students were getting ready to go home. It was on WHLO that I first heard "All The Young Dudes" by Mott The Hoople. However, I misheard it and thought the name of the group was "Martha Hoople".

I am surprised that would be allowed given that Salem is in the Youngstown market, so out of market even if WJW is carried there. I wonder if Youngstown's Fox affiliate could have blocked such an effort had it progressed.
Of course, Nexstar now owns both Fox affiliates, so go figure.

Speaking of Nexstar, what's going on with Rewind TV on WOIO 19.4? The picture keeps freezing and there's glitching in the audio. Yes, I know WOIO is owned by Gray, but the network is operated by Nexstar. Also strange that the affiliation ended up there and not on WJW, but that was likely because of WJW's outdated CBR encoders that they were still using at the time.

Also, why is Nexstar dragging their feet at distributing Rewind TV? I just checked their affiliates and the number of affiliates they currently have is exactly the same as when the network launched in 2021. Even the vast majority of Nexstar stations currently don't carry the network. If Nexstar is waiting for existing contracts to expire so that they can launch Rewind TV on their stations, I would think that most of them would have done so by now.
