98.1 KISS FM/ V101.1

This afternoon I got a big chuckle. I am fully aware that these two stations, (KHYL and KISQ) are both owned by Clear Channel and both have the same format. So as I was listening, I here a sweeper proclaiming "Sacramento's Old School and R & B, V 101.1"

For a second, I thought they were simulcasting that station. But then everything was back to normal with no explanation.

Same format, similar slogan, possibly the same VO guy. Last time I checked, both stations run Tony Sandoval and Lisa St. Regis, as does Hot 92.3 in LA and K-Ocean 105 in Monterey...possibly some other CC "Old School" stations I don't know about. There are a few differences - Hot has Rick Dees, Kiss-FM has Renel, and V-101.1 has Don Saint-John (alum of 610/KFRC).

Much of the content (mixes, etc) and VO production for V101.1 in Sacramento is done at Clear Channel San Francisco. hahahahaha, sounds like someone made a mistake in production.

Someone got the sweepers mixed up in Prophet.

I'm wondering why they don't just network the whole thing and not pretend to be local. Network radio boomed in the 30s and 40s and had its resurgence with talkradio in the late 80s up to today. Why not for music, too?

I agree. The same with voice-tracked DJs who never mention the music, and make a short comment about 4 times an hour. What's the point? While it's being networked, just cut the jocks, and insert some pre-recorded announcements from various voices - kind of like the old Bill Drake "Hit Parade" or "Solid Gold" automated FM formats.

The "Jack" format is also entertaining, though it means you have to hire writers for the funny inserts. That's probably more than Clear Channel is willing to spend.

Remember old KKSF 103.7 FM back in the 2000's Miranda Wilson and Maria Lopez were doing shows for Smooth Jazz Network. and they all used the old KKSF-FM jingle like K-K-S-F 103.7 with Smooth Jazz artists doing the ID's for BA until KKSF flipped to Classic Rock.

But look the audience that were Smooth Jazz fans on KKSF moved to KSBR online and Wavjazz.net and other web outlets.

Wish I'd caught that. I would have enjoyed the mistake. ;)

I listen to both stations. 98.1 comes in pretty good in the Sierra Foothills.

Don St. John did mornings on V101.1 today. The regular morning guy doesn't talk much, which is fine with me. If I want talk, I listen to News/Talk. I flip to V101.1 or 98.1 when Armstrong & Getty or Mark & Brian are on a break.

If you think about it that would make sense to create a 24hr network. Clear Channel has Rhythmix on its Iheartradio app but it plays currents while KISQ and KHHT play Oldies. I think KHYL just plays Oldies too no more currents. KOCN plays a few new hits. Out of all of them KISQ sounds the best to me. I actually like the 80's music they play.
