98.1 Kiss FM

Noticed some changes there:

Less 80's New Wave... heard them say that the 80's feature at noon "has moved to our sister station 103.7"

More Hip Hop... heard Xxxplosive by Dr. Dre in the middle of the afternoon. Kind of hard sounding for KISQ.

New positioning... "The Bay's Throwback Old School"

is this a response to Q102 or just some corporate thing that iheart is making them do? Aren't they still way ahead of Q102 in the ratings?

It seems like the Rhythmic AC's that do well... typically DON'T play a lot of rap or harder sounding music during the work day.

I also heard 103.7 say they are doing Disco Saturday Nights now, complete with Little Ricki. Plus, 103.7 has been doing Flashback Friday Nights for a few weeks, which is entirely 80s based, I'm guessing so Kiss can discontinue 80s Friday Night.

I'm also wondering if this is just a general phase out for the genre, or to compete with 102.1.

I'm personally not enjoying the 90s rap, especially when other stations play it.

I think they did it because 103.7 and 98.1 was starting to play the same music, this now makes it so 103.7 can play more of a variety of 80's and disco.

I knew this was coming with the new Classic Hip Hop Throwback station, but not surprised though. iHeartMedia is slowly flipping their old school format stations, the move was to compete with KRBQ. Which is doing pretty well with the recent nelson ratings report. KISQ is constantly adding new throwback songs every day.

Q102 beat Kiss in May for the first time. Q have doubled their audience since Feb. Love how Kiss has inserted the word “throwback” into their liners as if it’s been there all along. Nice try.

If it not broke, Don't fix it

Ever since Q beat them in the raitings, iHart got scared

Do you think Kiss listeners would want to hear 90's Hip Hop?

For the most part, NO.

However pre-Q they had a few 90's hip hop tracks sprinkled in. iHeart did the same thing with V101.1 in Sacramento.

Kiss-FM tweaks again: I was listening yesterday and today and it seems like they gave last month's tweak a re-think. The harder-edged '90s rap (Snoop, Dr Dre etc) that they'd been playing several times an hour has disappeared, mostly. They haven't brought back the white dance-pop stuff, but I heard more of the upbeat R&B hits they've been known for the past couple years ("Somebody's Watching Me", for one example). They've also added ballads that they never used to bother with: Whitney, Mariah, even Stevie Wonder's dreaded "I Just Called to Say I Love You". I'm guessing they got an earful from their core listeners about the makeover.

They've also brought back a lot of the 70s music they originally ditched after the tweak (Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Ohio Players, etc...). I also heard Madonna's 'Holiday' a couple times in the last week, and they had stopped playing her, too.

On a related note, when 98.1 made the change, 103.7 started playing a lot more new-wave/synth-pop and disco in their regular playlist, but have also scaled that back recently and gone back to the more typical classic rock that they play.

I'd like to see iHeart react less and wait out the storm... the quiet storm. See what I did there? :)
