98.1 pre-Y98

What was on 98.1 prior to becoming Y98?

It was KSLQ, one of Bartell's "Super Q" CHR stations. I believe it had several formats before then, but I'm not sure what they were.

Originally KSTL-FM - the station went on the air April 2, 1960, according to STLRADIO.COM. The station was sold to Foreground Music Inc. in 1967, and the call letters were changed to KRCH. Bartell bought the station in 1972 and launched KSLQ. In 1982, EZ Communications purchased the station, and the call letters were flipped to the current KYKY as of 9/22/82, so Y98 will be celebrating 30 years this year. Both Guy Phillips and Stel Pontikes have been there the entire run, dating back to the KSLQ days.

Stel and Guy have been there for the entire KYKY run, but not the entire KSLQ portion. As well, EZ took the station in early 1985, not 1982. I was their first hire on the air. The KYKY calls came from previous ownership.

When I worked there, we jokingly called KYKY "your lubrication station"!

Where is Leslie O'Brien these days? She was one of my favorite Y Dj's, I followed her to the River and Mix then she vanished when Mix went country

Mix...there's a station that didn't get a chance...I loved that station!

How long has it been a Hot AC station?

As KSLQ, wasn't it among the first FM top 40 stations in the nation? KCBQ/SD was a phenomenal Bartell station that reached LA rather easily back then, and I listened to it from time to time, and especially Charlie Tuna after he left the beyond-legendary 93/KHJ in 1972 to do mornings there.

There were FM Top 40 stations well before KSLQ. Not even close to being one of the first.
