98.1 WOGL Top 1000 Countdown sounding great...

Lots of good songs played, and the formatics/imaging sound awesome. This station is still doing its thing after all these years. Anyone else here miss Don Cannon as morning guy? Holiday and Charger still sound great as well as all those specialty shows.

You can't go wrong with Ross Britain. I loved Don back in the day but they've got quite the ensemble together now.

Nobody can replace Big Ron O'Brien. :'(

You're right about that. I think CBS is very happy with the guy who stepped in, though. Cadillac Jack has had ratings success that Big Ron never had at WOGL.

Some of the songs WOGL are playing on this countdown are amazing. I haven't heard corporate radio play them in years. Are all these songs normally in 98.1's playlist, or do they just dig out some of these one-hit wonders for the big countdown? I've never really been much of a 98.1 listener, but I'm getting a new respect for them after hearing some of these tunes. It'd be a shame though if they only played music this good on a countdown.

They will go back to the stale Motown 200 after the holiday....the last time I had that frequency on was in 1975 when it was still Solid Gold Radio before Keating ruined it...

Don't worry. Once this Top 1000 gimmick wraps up, they'll revert back to the very forgettable station they really are. Like in your home territoy with The Hawk. You happen to catch 'ODE during one of their A to Z stints and you hear some listenable radio. Then, back to the same old same old.

I have to ask if anybody has seen the list of what comprises their Top 1000. I'd love to see it. I heard a few minutes here and there. Come on now, Boogie Fever and Let's Hear It For The Boy are Top 1000? I'll go way out on a limb and say something like Wildfire by Michael Murphy didn't make the list. Uh how 'bout Suspicion by Terry Stafford? How many great songs didn't make the list but songs that sold much much less and charted much much lower did?

I am 34 years old and love 50's and 60's music so I don't listen to WOGL anymore because I have XM for my music. But after reading post on this site about there Countdown sounding great I went to yes.com and looked over the music they are playing and it looks like they are even playing some 50's music if that is true and yes.com is not wrong God I wish they would keep playing them.

If only they got rid of a few of those boring WBUD type songs and a few classic rock ones that slow the station down. Anyone listening to Street Corner Sunday 21st Anniversary show? If only Holiday went back live in the studio and did this, but still sounds great nonetheless.

If you want to hear some good "oh wow" tunes and a much, much better selection than WOGL, tune into WMMR this weekend and the upcoming week....no comparison...

The 1776 songs on WMMR ARE sounding great!

Programming wise, WOGL sounds great-but technically-UGH!! Compare them to WCBS-FM and you'll see what I mean. 'CBS FM sounds REALLY good, while 'OGL has this really bad midrange distortion.

In fact, does any Philly station really sound that good these days?

they did not air casey kasem's american top 40 the 70's that saturday morning!!! they passed up what was the very first AT-40 show from
july-4-1970! i was very upset.but now have recovered.they still carry the show anyway.

'OGL just isn't what it was...and apparently they must have had some evidence that ratings justified dumping the Philly Sound of not just the 70's but the 50's to 70's. It's a shame. It was such a good oldies station in the 90's that I listened to it online all the time before the years when online listening was stricken out before coming back the last few years. I lived over a thousand miles from Phila. and WOGL blew Kansas City's (constantly repeating song station) KCMO out of the water at that time. Now, both are 70's shells of what they once were.

But what they are is a successful business. By not being what they were a decade or two ago, they're doing exactly the right thing.
