Is their any research for these shows or is it just a variant of the A-Z countdown? They have good songs you never hear anymore that would be good in regular rotation.

Simply put: a holiday period when there may not be as high of listenership due to vacations et al. means that it's okay for a WOGL to play an "oh wow" here and there - hence why they construe these countdowns to run over holiday periods in the first place. And, of course, no matter what the listener thinks, as far as the regular corporate playlist is concerned, it's Boz Scaggs over The Babys every time.
