98.3 CFLY Format now Hot A/C or CHR ?

98.3 Fly-FM Kingston,Ont seemed to be getting to hot for A/C sounding more and more like a will formatted CHR hit music station . Now they have started playing more 80's and 90's and rock mixed with CHR . What are they doing?
they are #2 in the market and CHR format seemed to be a perfect for the market . Any ideas ??

They lost me years ago...I remember when they were a 'beautiful music' station. I'm rather surprised that they are (only at) number 2, who's number 1 these days?

I remember that "Easy Favorites Y98.3 FM"
105.7 CIKR (K-ROCK) is #1 these days

CIKR is #1, and CFLY is #2...where are the other stations at? How about CFFX and CKLC since they moved to FM?

98.3 has a monster signal...goes down into Utica and Syracuse as well as the 1000 islands and NNY.

Used to. Now there's a translator on 98.3 that blocks it out of Syracuse. There's still a spot in downtown Rochester where I can almost always hear it clearly, though!

CFLY also hits Ottawa South. Here some history CFLY provided MUZAK for Ottawa South after then 93.9 CKKL dropped MUZAK around 1992

I'm not sure where the other stations are in ratings

The days of "beautiful music" are gone pretty much everywhere these days.
The big surprise here is that hit music is suddenly more important than Soft hits/soft variety like a CHFI type station, and even that's getting heavier...Genesis and all!

One would think that modeling after a CHFI type station in another market would still do better than hit music. Oh well...

Kingston has 2 CHFI type stations in the market 104.3 CFFX (Lite Rock 104.3) and 88.7 CKYM (Soft Rock 88.7 MY FM) also 102.7 WLYK serves Kingston as Timeless Favorites its not like CHFI but its a 55+ station that seems
to do great in Kingston.

Yes, but wasn't Fly FM the big Soft AC station at one time? ???
Gaining ratings on par with what CHFI is to Toronto? ???
If so, it's sad to see that die.

And yet CKOT-FM in Tillsonburg (101.3) does well in London, consistently #6 - ahead of all the AM stations and at least one FM. One of the few stations to broadcast "beautiful music". And they're live 5 AM to midnight daily.

Fly was a big soft A/C station in power but not in ratings. On FM ratings where not important and the CRTC would only let few formats on FM like M.O.R. ( muzak, Jazz, Classical ) so not to compete with AM Stations witch supported the FM's. In the late 70's the CRTC started to allow other formats but for a FM station it was hard to get approved for a format change. so in 1982-83 fly started to take the muzak out of the play list and added very soft rock. 1998 CFLY became hot A/C and sister station 1380 CKLC switched to soft A/C .

I didn't know a station like this that played beautiful music where still in Canada.

Yes. the last of it's kind. Thankfully it's independently run, so no power that be higher up can ever tell them to change format.

Unfortunantly though, no website and no listen live link.

Speaking of formats that havn't yet changed, it's also good thing Wave 94.7 in Hamilton is owned by a little guy.
If it were run by one of the big guys, One could easily believe they would have gone Country to continue on where Country 95.3 left off. (Country 95.3 had better ratings than that of Wave 94.7)

Back to the topic of Fly, yep sounds like it's trying to be something very CHR leaning, at least.

Their beautiful music includes some jazz, which around here is otherwise only available from a Sunday show on Fanshawe's 106.9, which I've heard is very well done and has a loyal following. There's also CBC Radio 2 on occasion.

Easy 101 recently launched a website, but no listen live link. The website looks to be still under construction.

Fortunately, their coverage area is quite large - apparently they come in from Thamesville to Oakville and Lake Erie up to Listowel, taking in London, K/W, and part of the Hamilton area. I've gotten them clearly in Kitchener. Their news coverage takes in a very large area as well, and stories from Woodstock, Simcoe, Caledonia, London, Stratford, Exeter, and St. Thomas are common.

Easy 101 has also had some very well-paying contests, although they don't flaunt it like some of the bigger stations. I remember a few years ago they gave away $10,000 to a listener.
