Tell me exactly how a good salesperson gets the buy in a major market when the advertising agency says they are buying the top 3 rated stations in their coveted demographic. I've been there. You could be handing them a winning lottery ticket if they'll buy and the answer is still no...even people you've dealt with for years at other stations in other markets. PPM and dairies might not matter to you but any business with an adequate budget has an advertising agency and that agency justifies their buys based on ratings. In a small town you don't need ratings.

Yes you can sell Cable TV ads, many times to moms and pops. They don't spend much money and you'll blow your commission in gas and time. You'll be lucky to clear minimum wage unless they're going to give you a salary AND commission. Most like to offer a starvation guarantee and once you reach that starvation guarantee in commission every account beyond that is collected means extra dollars. If the client doesn't pay, you don't get that commission. Even in a sizable city, it's tough going selling cable TV (partly due to the production charges).

Someone somewhat slammed the 'kick in' a network might offer a station in a market where an affiliate is needed: Scenario 1 is to stay with what you're doing and make no money. Scenario 2 is to take the nominal dollars and get your staff talking about a nationally known product you have as an exclusive in your city.

As for KARR 1460, I haven't heard it in South King County where I live, not since the big change a few years ago, when they were playing hard core rap (with swear words included) a few nights, before it went back to all night hymns (which were kind of relaxing), before disappearing into the ether, letting ESPN Yakima and California dominate 1460.
