Usually when you turn on the station you hear Diana Ross, Bruce Horrsiby, Elton John, Taylor Swift and some soft rock currents. Well on saturday I was listening and I heard Joan Jett, OMD, R.E.M, INXS, Shinead O'Conner and other such artists. Is KTK leaning more on the 80's stuff now. I know thay played 80's but it was usually Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lennox, Hall and Oates, Micheal Jackson, Pointer Sisters, Horrisby and Mathew Wilder. The biggest suprise to me is that AC DC is actually within the Top 100 range on the playlist according to yes.com with "You shook me all night long".

I liked the new stuff 98.5 is playing but is this the playlist a AC station should go by. While most AC's are focusing on Currents from Lady Gaga KTK is actually adding more older music. They haven't stopped playing the 70's, "Here comes the Sun" by The Beattles is still a playlist ataple. Oh and now they are adding harder 80's music.

With the envolving playlist they might as well add songs such as "You get what you get" by The New Radicals. "Blue Monday", "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "True Faith" by New Order, as well as "Lightning Crashs" by Live and other such music. Thats the playlist direcrion KTK is taking, might as well go all the way and even remove the Deliah show.
 
I'd swear that Entercom is turning KTK into more of an 80's station. With Madonna, M.J, Eurythmics and even Def Leppards "Pour some sugar on me".

Maybe the station is trying to counteract WMFQ 92 Q FM. 92 Q has been consitently mocking KTK as the station thazt puts you to sleep behind the wheel. So now KTK counteracts that with beefing up the playlist.

B.T.W- What is the target demo for 98.5, you would feel with the older demos in North Central Florida the station wouldn't go this route. I mean WDUV has a small share in the Ocala market, and that signal is almost non existant even in Ocala.

WKTK has always leaned more heavier 80s oriented during the weekends.
 
These 80's artists are not just on the weekend playlist. I've heard Prince, R.E.M and other 80's when I was listening yesterday afternoon. I would say the station while it is more 80's heavy on the weekend is starting to add that flavor to the weekday playlist. I have been listening to KTK for a while now and these format adjustments were non existence a couple of months ago.

The playlist has always played plenty of 70's music, softer 80's tunes and some soft rock from the 90's and today.

Now while the station still plays this music it is more edgy. Take this playlist and add "If You Leave" by OMD, "Come on Ellien" by Dexy's Midnight Runners and "Edge of Glory" by Lady Gaga. Slightly heavier on the 80's with a few upbeat currents added.
 
Gamefreak, I have followed your postings for some time. We share a passion for music. An enormous problem with radio is few are willing to take a chance on offering listeners something a little more unique than all the rest. With so many stations playing the same songs, it saddens me that so much great music is never ever heard.

Two formats are in a great position to buck that reality. One is a pop-oriented version of classic hits and the other is AC. Since this string is about an AC, I’ll stick with that.

I don’t know what would work in North Central Florida, but I see opportunity for a different kind of AC, especially in cities where there is diversity. I’ve seen demo estimates for what Jacksonville, as an example, will look like in the near future. Overall, radio here is not positioned well for the future given all the duplication of formats. Estimates show Hispanics will continue to grow and will need to be served.Trust me, they aren't interested in rock and country.

Admitting to a little bias here, my favorite genre of music through the mid/late 80’s and into the early 90’s is Freestyle. Not all titles would be appropriate for everyday listening and I’m only talking about a portion of the playlist devoted to it. But there is a good deal of it that lends itself well with today’s hits/artists as well as the traditional songs one would find in an 80’s/90’s playlists, especially for weekend themed specials.

You have talked about the Point quite a lot in the Tampa board. I always thought there was so much opportunity for an 80’s/90’s based format but the playlist way too restrictive and that’s one of the main reasons for the Point’s demise. Cox apparently didn't thing there was much of a future for it. IMO, they are wrong.

Oops, I’m getting back to classic hits again. But in the case of Jax, I saw tremendous opportunity for WJGH to get away from sounding like son of Eagle and going more hits oriented to include all those 80’s tunes no one plays while sister RadioNow 97.9 went AC picking up the songs chronologically where Magic 107-3 left off. Well, that opportunity is now out the window. Jax could use another form of an AC, one that offers a majority of upbeat titles with some Freestyle undertones and very little rock-oriented music.

With so much talk of Rock 104-5 flipping to Urban, I believe if they brought an 80’s/90’s hits based station to Jax, it could be a great sister station to WAPE and I also believe they will satisfy a programming hole. Those who were in high school in the 90’s, let’s say, listen to a lot of different radio stations. There is a need for something they can call their own. Another Urban will come one day, but I believe something else getting ahead of not only an ethnic power curve but to all those listeners who are looking for music they loved while growing up.
 
This station still puts many to sleep. The stick isn't what it used to be and personally I hope 92.9 gives them a good run..........

KTK was deflowered by Entercom as a result of giving 98.7 in "Tampa" a better shot of success with a Pinellas County transmitter than Cortez Rd in Bradenton could.

All I am saying with KTK is if Entercom insists on playing heavier artists they might as well change the dated liners between the songs. Delilah is more of a mainstream AC fling as well and I wouldn't think will be on a station that plays AC/DC, Def Leppard. and Joan Jett. If this is what KTK's core audience wants that is great.

I would just go all the way a add a whole bunch of music that hasn't been played on North Central Florida radio in many years. Play familiar favorites but throw one-hit wonders and oh-wow songs in the mix. Don't just add music just about every other station plays.
 
B.T.W- I do not feel AC/DC and Def Leppard should be played on a AC Station. Other than that KTK adding more 70's and 80's Pop, Disco and Lighter Rock and Alternative tunes will be great. Make them sound like a station with flavor, leave the burned out AC/DC and Def Leppard to classic rock stations.

Erasure- Late 80's Pop, actually did a cover of Abba's "Take a Chance on me"
Depeche Mode- Most of their singles are AC friendly.
Belinda Carlisle- "Mad about You", "Heaven is a Place on Earth", "Circle in the Sand", "Leave a light on"
Yaz- Early 80's Synthpop
Ace of Base- "The Sign" is massively burnt out, try other singles like "Don't Turn Around", "Beautiful Life" and their cover of "Cruel Summer"
Abba- Most of their music fits the format well
Bruce Springsteen- Made plenty of great rock and pop tunes
Dream Academy- Life in a Northern Town
Cher- Most of her music is good
Phil Collins- "Another Day in Paradise", "Two Hearts"
R.E.M- "South Central Rain", "Driver 8", "Losing my Religion", "Everybody Hurts", "Man on the Moon"
Eurythmics- Released many great 80's singles other than "Here comes the rain" and "Sweet Dreams"
Toad the Wet Sprocket- "Walk on the Ocean" and "All I want" would be great playlist stables
Rockwell- The station does already play Micheal Jackson
Debbie Gibson & Tiffany- Late 80's Pop
Everything but the Girl- Missing
Whitney Houston
New Order- We all know I'm biased towards this band, but hey they got airplay on VH1. Which was the AC version of MTV.
