Well, you can't compare SA radio to Austin radio. There's more competition in SA than there is Austin. For example, there's 4 Top 40 stations. All targeting a different niche in SA youth. The Beat does lean more Urban but not by much. KTFM and KXXM are both Top 40 with a Rhythmic lean. KLTO/Party 97-7 is Top 40 Pop. I'm sure Univision is looking at attracting some of Party cume before EMF takes over. Btw, Party's cume registered over 300,000 last month.

Oh, The Beat in Austin isn't that impressive either. They've also added dance music from LMFAO and Far East Movement.

I love when people say stations in one place are better than stations in another. Usually, this means that the observer does not understand why a format variant in one market, while right for there, will be wrong in another market and situation.

As an example, for how many months and years has The Beat been #1 in San Antonio and what are the stats for the Austin station of the same name? Or, even more interesting to think about: how big would Chapman have been if he had moved to LA? Or how would Wally Phillips have done in Philly? Or Stern in McAllen?

I think some of you are forgetting one very important piece of the puzzle here.

Aside from not being able to please everyone, top 40 has contributed a great deal to the merging of Pop and Hip Hop music. Stations like the KBBT have chosen to change with the changing times. Its either evolve or become extinct.

If I personally were running the show I would veer far away from top 40 and go more urban but that is just my opinion. Homie Marco knows what he is doing, I'm sure those guys will be just fine in the end.

As far as the station moniker... that's been their positioning statement since day 1. I do not see them changing it anytime soon.

Your positioning statement should answer the question, "What are you famous for?" That may not necessarily be the main thing you do, but it is what the listeners know you for.

Well, over this past year they have tweak the moniker just a bit. It was "#1 For Hip Hop/R&B". Now, it's "#1 For The Most Hip Hop/R&B". I'm just curious to see how much longer they can continue with this tagline as they add more non Hip Hop artist.

Which brings me to this question, if Hip Hop is on the decline as we've seen it over the past few years. Does a station want to be identified as a Hip Hop station?

The short answer is "Whatever works."
Please recall that for decades Top 40 stations called themselves "Rock."
"The Rock of Austin"
"Rockin' 91"
"Stereo Rock"
Etc.
But they were stations that played their share of pop, R&B, crossover country, etc. The label "The Most Hip Hop" will stick as long as it's cool and continues to attract listeners to the station.

If a station veers away form the bubble sound of a top 40 then sure. However being how a lot of Hip Hop stations are going this route, I could see your argument. =)

I think S.A./Austin have both have had some notable pop/urban stations in the past several decades (particularly S.A.) but neither are too special right now at least in the CHR/hip hop category.

I will say that 98.5 the Beat may not be great for new music, etc. but it does have a very distinctive sound and personalities while 96.7 and 102.3 and Austin are really quite generic in most day parts and very similar sounding stations could be found in a lot of markets. Austin currently stands out in the urban realm with community station KAZI, while the only true urban radio (outside of gospel AM) in S.A. is KROV on HD2. In other formats, San Antonio does have a strong classic hits/oldies format in KONO and a very locally distinctive long-time Tejano station in KXTN. Austin's strengths are quite different - KGSR in AAA (though some would argue it has been watered down over the years) and a popular and pretty unique local public radio station in KUT-FM. In past years, country KVET really stood out for Austin-centric music identity. So, these are very different radio markets with different audiences and areas of local flavor.
