98.5 the beat

Now that Univision has flipped sister station KPTY in Houston, could 98.5 flip? It is the only hip hop station univision has now and i don't know if it matters how well it does. Didn't 96.1 in the valley do very well before flipping to Recuerdo? For example i could see them doing what they did in houston, the Spanish CHR (95X) to 98.5 and sending hip hop (the beat) to a weaker signal, 95.1....then eventually kill it my flipping to Que Buena (regional Mexican)

You're kidding. Moving the #1 overall station for years to a weaker signal?
I think I would ride that horse it as long as it lasts.
And don't forget Univision is also doing active rock on 97.7.
So they have some interest in non-Spanish formats.

they also still own kiss 97.3 in Albuquerque, NM and also a classic rock station there too

That's highly unlikely. The Beat is very successful compared to Party in Houston. Keep in mind, San Antonio Hispanics are second and third generation.

Univision had intentions to flip Party since moving it to 93.3 to place Tu Musica on 104.9. Unless Power 106.7 surpasses The Beat, it's not going anywhere. However, a La Que Buena on 98.5 could be a good competition to Estereo Latino. Then again, as saradio said, there are lots of 2nd and 3rd generation hispanics in San Antonio.

Too bad 93.3 didn't flip to active rock.

Why would Univision compete with itself? Why take listeners away from another of its stations? It makes more sense to have each station target a particular niche.

They do target different groups... regional Mexican has several mutually exclusive varieties.

True but i assume Univision is like Radio One,keeps a more narrow focus, plus in this economic climate, never say never....

agreed about rock on 93.3.. :)

I wish 98.5 The Beat would dissapear. I can't believe that crap makes the airwaves. My younger friends listen to that station and they have a few things in common. Low IQ's, no motivation, no ambition, and a disdain for education. That genre is a mirror image of a Culture of Failure.

its not the beats fault.... its the music in general

Hip Hop is horrible now-a-days

besides, power plays the same crap the beat plays. least the beat doesnt play the super edited songs like power does. (i have heard them play versions of songs that edit out A55)

It's kinda funny but over the years I've been told the same thing about country, album rock, Spanish language and news/talk.

No, Kiss is still a part of the group.

I still do not understand why or how that noise is supposed to be popular, even among the ethnic groups not represented by the performers ( don't intend to offend anyone or imply any non pc indiscretions). That music sounds all the same. Its just a repetitive beat, chorus and monotone ranting, much like the old 'beatniks' reading poetry that didn't rhyme. It doesn't seem to take much talent just to rant out on the spot lyrics. Real music involves singing. For the majority of us, singing is very difficult and takes lots of practice. Singing involves a knowledge of music, timing and scales, alternating pitches, chords, harmonies and some level of grammar involving rhyming and synonyms, which is supposed to enhance or be enhanced by the accompanying music. Anybody can 'sample' someone else's hard work and make up a few repetitive lyrics. But it seems that in this point and click generation, there are very few with any imagination, originality or real un-computer aided talent. Just try to decipher an email, not a text message, from someone under the age of 30. Spellchecker isn't any good if you don't understand the basics of grammar or spelling. But it could also just be another passing fad. Back in the early to mid '90s, locally, tejano music was all the rage, then hip hop and rap took over. What's next, Albanian country armpit accordion polkas?

The Beat's ratings and the money their artists make would suggest you're now officially out of touch.

Um...not all rap artists are living in mansons with Bentleys. That also goes for all the has-beens as early as 2004. There's nothing "out of touch" about 1st of 5. Anything with a "repetitive beat, chorus and monotone ranting" gets old fast, weather it's rap, country, pop, rock, or "armpit accordion polkas." Those belong to a kindergarden music class.

Sampling used to be cool becasue early rap artists used jazz and funk samples. It was awesome to hear a horns section during a break. This was stuff rap artists would listen to on a regular basis or was influenced by their parents. During the late 90s, people took sampling too literally, even outside rap music. NOw you have Jessica Simpson singing over the music of John Mellancamp's "Jack and Diane?" How original.

Then again, I could have saved 30 grand by going to college and getting a music degree. I must be out of touch then.

I used to listen to lots of tejano music as a kid, all thanks to my family. I can hear La Charranga in my head as I type. I was the only white kid dancing to tejano music in middle school dances.

What I like about the free market system is that elitists have minimal impact. Those with "good taste" can look down on the music KBBT plays, but they can't control what the masses listen to. The people of SA have made the BEAT #1.

Its called the lowest common denominator. The dude who makes my burger at Burger King has made the 98.5 number one. Congratulations. Now drop some more chicken back there while you're at it.
