98.7 ahhhh Zone? no... Point!?... that's not it either... Simon????

Well, if I remember correctly 98.7 in Greensboro is going on 19 months with the same format... They're due a format change aren't they? Doesn't their format expire after about 18 months?

Their web site says that a major announcement is coming at 7:45am on Monday. Format change?

Unless they're going to announce that Hitz94 is going Oldies! :D Or, maybe they're going to can Whicker in the Morning? One can only hope! That has to be one of the worst Morning Shows in history. Yup, 98.7 is kind of like the weather...if you don't like it...hold on, cuz it's gonna change!

Might be a little early, yet. After all they're still concentrating on The Walf. They don't even have the air staff in place.....let's do one at a time. ;)

For those keeping score let us not forget that the brass at Entercom fired the "Country" torpedo merely weeks after battle broke out on the Urban A/C front. I would have never expected a "corporately approved" format change (from a well billing Oldies to boot) just weeks after the war chest was cracked for an outdoor campaign for QMG.

Almost gives you the feeling someones in a hurry up and "make a mark" mode over there..

Speaking of 98.7 This might be interesting to some.....

I found an old tape of mine a few days ago, that apparently hasn't been touched for the past the 13 years. Since I found out that the tape has an entire side of 98.7 going back(to what i can get out of the ads and talk) to around May of 1993. This was when it used to be 98.7 KISS FM! Man oh man. How I wish it still was a Top 40 outlet. They were awesome back then. There is this guy on there who went by "Cadillac Jack" ?(anyone know who he was/is and what he's up to now ?) Anyways, great sounding audio and I actually remember having this recorded. Even though i was 7. Yea, I guess this whole love of radio has been with me for a long time.

Oh and the other side has 30 minutes of 97.1 when it was Power 97. Could ya tell what i listened to back then ? (haha)

dang, it takes me back....

Caddi Jack was cool. What about Dale O Brian, Dwayne Ward, Etc?? Not sure if 98.7 is gonna flip, though. They actually just ran some promo that said something about playing everything for almost a year and a half "and it's the longest we ever stuck with anything". Nothing like telling the truth!

Wouldn't it be interesting if Simon, ZTK and THZ all flipped this week?

I just don't see a format flip in the cards for SIMON but then who would have thought ENTERCOM would flip Oldies 93 to country? Keeping the current format on SIMON is dumb but killing Oldies 93 was dumber! I have been told the WOLF staff, what little staff there is, is walking around patting themselfs on the back saying they have TQR on the run. I say only in their minds.

Just some Sunday nite musing, but what about the possibility of 98.7 flipping to Hot AC? It certainly is a viable format in competent hands, and since 94 is going classic top 40......... just food for thought. 'TQR on the run? Not by a longshot. Not anytime soon. It's a whole lot easier to "tighten up" overnight than to "start up" from scratch.

I giggle at the thought of the wolf having a billion year old country station like TQR "On The Run". For what it's worth, I really think those wolf guys really missed a great opportunity to WOW the country audience and ultimately cut into TQR. They obviously rushed the launch, resulting in what I thought was pretty sloppy song rotation (ballad to ballad, female to female). Their imaging was pretty non-compelling to this area (wolf's just aren't a top of mind animal in the Triad), their music sounds just like TQR's (not leaning more male or female) and they didn't launch with any high profile or local jocks to grab some interest. Combine all those elements and top it off with an expensive TV campaign and you've got listeners that sample a jukebox playing the same songs as their "old" radio station.

Like a new restaurant, they'll sample it once but if they don't have a great experience, or you don't give them a compelling reason to stay then they'll go back to the restaurant they are familiar with and you'll pay hell to get them back.

Just seems like wasted $$ to me...

One would assume you need some experienced talent to go into this kind of battle. I heard the old Oldies PD was going to be programming Wolf? Might be a great guy but this is when you spend some $$ and get a successful Country PD from another market.

Seems to me like the TQR guys once again have nothing to worry about.... :(

Yet ANOTHER name change there, Zapper? Works wonders for your credibility!

Don't think the Point, er Zone, uh Simon will do Hot AC. They seem to follow fads with that station, so the Movin' format might be next. Unless there's something newer.

I remember the good old days - when they were KISS FM too - that would be great to flip time back

Does anyone remember when 98.7 was WRQK? They called themselves K99 in those days. Think Mr Boom Boom was there as well, along with some other good ones. They were 100kw even back then but had a transmitter at that time that was too short to hardly make it beyond Winston Salem... They played a mix if I recall of oldies and some newer music at the time in the late 70's and early 80's. I would love to hear some old tapes from those days...

I remember WRQK. I remember when it sounded like WMAG. I listened to "beautiful music" on WSPA 98.9 and was always having trouble with the signal.

Wes Jones from the WRQK "Wes & Willie" show now works for Country Legends 98.3 and Willie Edwards now does mornings on WLXN, the new Majic 94.1's sister AM station. One of them might have some old recordings from their show. You should start a thread about WRQK and I'm sure one of them will respond.

Ahhhh, the olden days when Tom Armshaw was there...Boomer can tell some of the most gut busting stories about Armshaw and the dog. He and I have sat around over a beer and he had me rolling on the floor I was laughing so hard.
