98.7 and 97.1

I came across some old cassette tapes of my sisters when she went to Catholic University in DC, in the early 70's. I cannot believe there were two oldies stations at that time, WMOD-98.7, "Classic Rock and Roll" and the station with a "Heart of Gold" 97.1 they used Neil Young's song Heart of Gold in their liner. They were fantastic, so many "oh wow" tunes. They sounded automated, but were great. Does anyone remember these stations and what years were they oldies, how did they do in the ratings?? I never heard the call letters on 97.1. Thanks, great times there, I was in Philly so I never heard them.

97.1 was (and still is) WASH-FM, originally owned by Metromedia, now owned by Clear Channel. I don't believe WASH-FM was ever a full-fledged all-oldies station. WMOD-FM/98.7 was oldies in the early 1970's. After 'MOD gave up the ghost on oldies, rim-shotter WXTR/104.1 from LaPlata, MD (now Classical WGMS from Waldorf, MD) went all-oldies as "Extra/104" adding syndicated "Wolfman Jack's Graffiti Gold" on Saturday nights. Da'Wolf would later on join the station as a live jock. Oldies WMOD-FM 98.7 was originally WOL-FM and is now Country formatted WMZQ (you guessed it, also owned by Clear Channel).
