98.7 COULD be Tampa's WINK

I know it's far fetched but, after spending the weekend listening to WINK in Ft. Myers let's here some thoughts on 98.7 going to the 90's and Now format.

WINK is very well programmed, sure, WINK has more power but, I think if SJT tightens up their playlist and completely scrap their afternoon and night guys in favor of shows that more closely mirror their morning and mid-day folks they could actually pull off the 90's and now in Tampa.

It would have to be programmed well though otherwise it would just suck. I know everyone here thinks that CBS is set on moving 1010 to 98.7 and re-branding as "The Fan" but, I just don't see an investment in FM Sports for a station that has no potential for garnering the broadcast rights to any local team.

USF would be the first target in all likelihood. College sports are moneymakers, alumni business owners buy spots. CC has all 3 pro teams, so USF could be sold on having more of a stage to themselves.

After that if you have to wait for the Bucs, Rays and Lightning contracts to expire, you go after Florida State (I'm assuming CC still controls the Gator network), NASCAR, Orlando Magic. It's something other than a talk show at least.

And the real thing that is changing in this business is that owners are no longer willing to pay the massive music rights fees for stations outside the top 5 in-demo. Spoken word formats are simply more profitable because this overhead is gone.

CC has USF Football with ISP. Do you think the other sports would pull enough audience?

Sports stations are less about ratings and more about billing.

You could also get a situation where the minor sports were only cleared on AM.

CBS switched the legendary CHR B94 in Pittsburgh to all sports, and the first contract they pulled away from CC was Pitt football and basketball, which was in a situation similar to to UCF in that they fell behind the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates as a priority for CC. CBS now has the Pirates as well.

Contracts expire, teams are always looking for a better deal.

I knew I could count on Pittsburgh poster Parttimer to illustrate the point that I was about to make, and that is: The Pittsburgh "Fan" started with nothing (i.e. sports contracts). Clear Channel bogarted them all. Now, Pittsburgh's "Fan" has a whole lot of something.

Same deal in Philadelphia, though it used to be CBS holding rights to all four major locals (!). Recently, the Sixers jumped to the rival "Fanatic" - the FM sports station run by Greater Media - and shortly after, the Flyers followed suit.

I remember in the 80s when Oldies was on in at least one major market. As we got towards the 2000s, 80s stations started popping up.
What's next in the evolution? 90s? Sooner or later, 90s programmed stations are bound to start appearing.
Do you think a 90s Pop/Top 40 Hits station (that even plays 90s Rhythmic) will work? Tampa Bay does have a large African American/Hispanic population and hell, I would personally love to hear a good variety 90s pop format, even going into the early 2000s.
Just throwing it out there. ::)

Here's a sample of WINK's Playlist for tonight. I believe that it has enough modern hits mixed with the perfect amount of 90's and early 2000's. If we had that here I think it'd go over great. MIX is all over the map. The bottom line though isn't what's being played it's HOW it's being played. Notice how the music just fits together consecutively.
