98.7 fm

Looks like Cox is making the move soon to taking over that 101.1 translator, just heard a promo on 98.7 FM today promoting "The Soul of Dayton" coming soon with a date that I couldn't hear due to traffic. If someone can find out the date, that would be great and would probably giveaway the date for Cox's new format.

On the Ultimate Oldies Radio website it says that their programming will stop streaming on 101.1 on September 8

My thoughts about 98.7 and their Sunday at noon launch.

Interesting choices for the pre-flip "stunt." Talk of the Soul of Dayton with classic R&B clearly pays well deserved homage to Bud Crowl and Turk Logan and the late, great 107.7 WDAO-FM. Still, the use of the instrumental version of Shirley Ellis' 1964 classic "The Name Game" seems to me to imply an upper demo era of R&B that I thought current radio would avoid like the plague. Or am I over-thinking that?

Might we hear a radio station that plays the 60s Memphis and Motown R&B sound? Will they give credit to the historic R&B talent that our Dayton community gave the world? We can only hope.

Of course, this is Cox Dayton. A few around here might remember the days leading up to the launch of their old classic rock 95.3 ZLR. A few well placed posts to this board's predecessor about someone "by accident" finding a website for the launch of a new oldies station on 95.3, complete with link to a fully functional website that in reality was nothing more than an elaborate ruse on the part of our friends, then on Wilmington Pike. Could this current "stunt" be a modern day version of that? Could we see 98.7 launch with a format totally different than what the current "stunt" implies?

In the meantime...Let's do Nick! Nick, Nick Bo-Bick. Banana Fana Fo Fick. Fee Fi Mo Mick. Nick!

Cox does not own 98.7.

Please, help us understand. While I never said that Cox owned the frequency, at last check 98.7 is relaying the HD3 of K99, so it appears that Cox must have some involvement in the frequency. Are you able to explain further? Thanks, Jason.

From what I understand, it's a deal that Cox worked out with the guy who owns 98.7FM. 98.7 is the HD3 of K99 which means it can broadcast at higher power even though it is an LPFM. In exchange, Cox gets to use 101.1FM (also owned by the same guy) and they can do whatever they want with it. I believe that it is K99's HD2 frequency as well so they can broadcast at higher than 100 watts. 98.7 WILL go with that format they are promoting, guaranteed. As far as what will popup on 101.1FM, it could be FM Sports, a simulcast of The Eagle, an AC, or even what they're doing in Jacksonville and put hip-hop and go up against Hot 1029... we will find out maybe Monday or this month sometime.

So if I understand what you're telling us, to generate programming for the 98.7 translator, the owner of that translator has worked a deal with Cox allowing him to originate programming for his 98.7 by using Cox's K99 HD3. Okay. Looking forward to how this plays out.

Check the listing for the frequency on Radio-Locator.com, and look at the coverage map. That will give you the licensed power levels, Jammin'.

FYI looks like they are testing the new 101.1 signal today. It's broadcasting k99 HD2 which currently is 95.3 The eagle. Signal covers Dayton very well...at least the part of town I was in.

I noticed this too. I wonder if they will just continue to relay The Eagle or launch with a permanent format?

The eagle it is! At least for now...on air they are now mentioning the 101.1 frequency.

Definitely going to be The Eagle, I don't think they'd mention it on-air, during their morning show, and get on that right away if it wasn't the case. Disappointed because Cox couldv'e really done something to shake up the competition with that frequency, but The Eagle now reaches further north and south. If this doesn't help their ratings, I would love to see them go with The Eagle on 101.1 and try something new on 95.3... this is where Jason Roberts tells me I'm an idiot :D

I agree lovejamminoldies. There is a station in Orlando that, I think, would be perfect for Dayton. It's owned by Cox and it's WMMO. Check it out at wmmo.com. If they really wanted to go after WTUE then that is the way they could go. The playlist is very diverse and if done right here I think it would do very well.

They should have put HOT 101.1, HITS 101.1 or POWER 101.1 as their format name. They would have switched to Pop/CHR/Top 40 right away. That would have brought in some competition with iHeart's WCHD-FM, which is Channel 99.9. If they didn't then who's competing with WCHD?

Channel 99.9 VS. ?

or is Channel solo.
