98.7 is flipping on Friday 1/10 6pm

A poster on the Dentist's Board (aka the NYRMB) opined that the TJ Show is "bleeding money and needs a buyer".

If this is true, perhaps that may be one reason that the lease with Emmis is ending with seven weeks to go.

Nothing factual in that statement at all. Keep in mind there is NOBODY who posts there that has nearly any clue how radio works in 2025 let alone 2005 other than when @DavidEduardo pops in there. THAT board only exits because I banned him from Mid-Atlantic Radio Board in 1997 for spamming about his WABC tribute site.

No one–not even John Catsimatidis–is going to pay Emmis $50 million for that station.

Hopefully, Smulyan has come to accept that reality and has reduced his asking price. My gut tells me otherwise.
I cannot fathom why Smulyan would continue to be that stubborn. For the sake of everyone, Friday should be the beginning of the end, whatever that end is.

We don't really know what the situation is.
Or if there's a deal in the works, just how it is being conducted. See the payment method EMF is using to buy the Salem CCMs.

I really doubt that the syndicator for The TJ Show is "bleeding money" otherwise the show (which is being cleared elsewhere) would no longer be in existence. They knew from the beginning they were on borrowed time and could end at a moment's notice.

That's a private business matter. It's not conducted in public. We have no idea what kinds of offers he has received or if he's open to negotiations.

Stations are bought and sold all the time, and the only way the public knows is when they've been announced.

I still laugh all these years later at Don and Mike making fun of him, and suggesting, a year or two before "American Pie", that he engaged in grotesque behavior with a mac and cheese dish.

The only things we know are the on-air announcement of a change, the (apparent) early opting-out of the TJ format and the (potentially) related DNS registration Lance spotted a few days earlier.

That's barely anything to go on, or it is everything. Might as well wait until tomorrow night.

Given that the show is announcing the change, my sense is that the syndicator (United Stations) is merely swapping in another show for the remainder of their LMA. Unless we see a revised LMA in the public file. But none of this means that Smulyan is being "stubborn."

They were honest and upfront about this from the start. They called it a "popup station" and that it could end at any time. So that time is this Friday.

Out of everything else USRN offers, Bob FM seems to match TJ the most and you could even keep TJ on in mornings. It would also align with the on-air liners as NYC has no variety hits station: potentially something a buyer might want to keep around.

That's why the "bleeding money" claim from elsewhere is just flat-out absurd.

Jeff Smulyan said in September 2023 that he was looking for $50 million. He needs that amount of money to buy out his stockholders and take the company private. He hasn't addressed that issue again since then.

Is it realistic? That's a matter of opinion. I'm sure like anything the price is negotiable. Making an offer involves having the money. Right now, that seems to be an issue, given the number of bankruptcies in radio.
Back when Cumulus did their $103 million deal with EMF for 6 stations (2 great signals in NYC and DC, 2 in San Jose and Atlanta, and 2 in Syracuse and Savannah), I guessed that the breakdown was something like $25 million for tier 1, $15 million for tier 2, and $10 million for the smaller markets. With the recent $80 million Salem sale of 7 properties (Atlanta, Los Angeles, Dallas, Portland, Cleveland, Sacramento, Colorado Springs) I think the value of FM in major markets has certainly not gone up. Salem needed the money to get out of debt (why were they in debt, anyway?), but maybe they saw the writing on the wall and got out while the getting was good. Emmis getting $50 million in 2025 is very unlikely in my opinion.

True. His hands may be tied by Emmis stakeholders demanding $$$ that just aren't out there in this environment, but who are willing to wait before throwing in the towel.
I thought Emmis was already private, but no, they're still publicly traded and are tbqh doing a lot better than most broadcast chains.
