98.7 Kiss FM-Ghetto Urban AC?

Can't figure out what 98.7 Kiss (WRKS) is doing.

They have added legendary Hip-Hop Mixer Cocoa Chanelle to weekends. Transferred Hot 97 Overnight host Little Nat to Kiss for the same shift. This host sounds as if she is straight outta the projects. Ed Lover is coming to the station.

Not sure how all of this is gonna help the station's ratings.

There is a four-way Hip-Hop battle on Saturday Nights.

98.7 Kiss is a mess!

Kiss doin fine. Playing songs and playing commericials. Lenny Green on nights. Michael Baisden and his brand of commenteredy...I don't understand what you don't like. Who even listens to radio on Saturday nights?

Not exactly. I didn't think of this before but did now, It actually makes sense. As your Urban audience grows older a good majority will migrate over to Urban AC. what would be better than to have the same DJs that you grew up with Evolve over to Urban AC with you. This is not a new Practice. Think about who was on Urban and is now on Urban AC. Doug Banks? DJ Red Alert? Wendy Williams? Bugsy? Ed Lover and Cocoa Chanelle are Being brought on help people transition from Urban to Urban AC. Some might not just listen to Kiss just for the music. but they hear now that Ed Lover is there and so is Cocoa Chanelle? they would be Like "I liked Ed Lover on Hot97 Let me go to Kiss to Listen to him" I would go as far as to say they might play a slight bit of hip hop when they are on to help snag the listener. Saturday nights now People will switch the dial to find the Hottest Mixes out there. What would be better then having a Top Mixer Like Cocoa Chanelle BLAZIN Some OLD SCHOOL Hip Hop in the mix over on Kiss. People would be like "Damn, that was my S#!+ back in the day!" She would probably Dig a bit Deeper in the Crates than DJ Mr Cee, but I think her show will do very nice on saturdays and might get some of the aging Demo to switch over to Kiss.

Yeah. Kiss is killing them in the ratings. Number #14 25-54. (http://www.examiner.com/ny-in-new-york/dreaming-of-a-lite-christmas).

Emmis must be make money out of the ying yang on this station.

Probably why they are making changes now. this should bring in some of the closer to 25 in the demo.

going younger is a dumb move...it will just alienate the older 40-54, richer listeners out in St. Albans and Valley Stream. Better move is to re-format failing property to re-acquire the 25-40 listener. Leave hot 97 for the under 25 crowd.

Correct me if I am wrong folks...

The reason why Kiss added "Ladies Night" with Cocoa Chanelle and Little Nat....WBLS added Marley Marl on Friday Nights and that station is also Urban AC.

So both stations are bringing back old school hip hop and r&b in full.

Remember this...Kiss and BLS were at war during the late 70s to now.

The radio wars start...NOW!

htowler,

I agree and see nothing wrong with WRKS (98.7 Kiss-FM) adding Cocoa Chanell to their airstaff.

As you stated in your post that Kiss-FM is bringing over Hip-Hop listeners who used to listen to (Hot 97) WQHT. As people grow older, their music taste change somewhat. A 15 year old listener to Rap in 1995 may tend to appreciate to hear more balads at age 30.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

As a .. ugh.. 35 year old and a fan of Hip Hop... I hardly listen to new hip hop anymore.. but hearing old jams brings me back to high school, college and even as a toddler recording old 98.7/ 107.5 mixes from back in the day.. I welcome the old school urban sound they play at night on weekends...

98.7 Kiss is #14 25-54. Lets see if ghettoizing Kiss helps. Talk to you in a few months.

It's not called "ghetto" but a sign of the times. More and More Urban AC stations should jump on playing old school hip-hop on weekends. Great Move!!

The feedback on the board seems to be in favor of going younger, but the only thing that gives me cause for concern is that, for many places in the city, Kiss is accepted as the corporate soundtrack. A Stephanie Mills or Alicia Keys song is appropriate for everyone in a waiting room, office, or a corporate picnic; and, while I might like to hear a Boogie Down Productions or NWA song, I think that sort of programming will scare away the establishment listenership and really hurt billing. Even less extreme old schools rappers: Salt n Peppa, Run DMC, LL Cool J....Gangstar. It's tough to segue into them from Anita Baker.

Clearly Emmis ought to do something to address its 25-45 problem: ballads today are terrible [so damn beatiful!?!? really, really, that's the bes you could do? I don't know how we as a nation have gone from make me say it again girl to so damn beatiful, we must all be taking stupid pillls, but I digress] so the 25-40 demo has held tight to "classic" hip-hop and need an outlet (see my comments on WRXP), but poisoning milking cow is not the right strategy.

Corporate offices , and other offices in general are not open Saturday evenings. I think as long they keep the play list appropriate during weekdays hours they will keep listeners. I think its a great idea they do old-school hip-hop and R&B Saturday evenings older people like to be in a party mood too :).

Weekends? I have heard Eric B & Rakim's "I know you got soul",LL Cool J's "Around the way girl" and A Tribe Called Quest's "Bonita Applebaum" during the week during middays.

Not good for the office crowd.

Jersey dude i agree idk about middle of the day playing that leave it for HOT 97 lol

MOST Offices dont have on Kiss anyway, Lite Rules the office radio. the few that might play Kiss are probably "hip" enough to where the bit of hip hop that is played is acceptable.

or so the lite sales staff claim...

City and State offices play Kiss...Most cheap mom and pop department stores in Queens and Brooklyn play Kiss...other places...not too sure. Lots of wealthy people in this town work for the city and the state, and shop at mom and pop department stores in Queens and Brooklyn.

I agree that carefully selected hip-hop, native tongues stuff, can fit within the context of urban AC. For Emmis, the real problem is that the Kiss audience is relativly wealthy, but aging, and it has a format that has only had a breakout artist every three or four years since the mid 90s. I don't think, ona single frequency, they can go younger and not alienate the money demo.

Bump the office crowd. Those are hip-hop staples more than 20 years old--if folks aren't used to them by now, they'll never be.

That's very true. Even the urban contemporaries that are heavily dayparted are spinning the classic hip-hop in their midday rotations and mix shows. It's the coming of the times and all facets of urban music from the all eras should be allowed on air.
