98.7 Kiss FM replaces Birmingham Christmas tree

After the city of Birmingham's Christmas tree was burned in the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 15, 98.7 Kiss FM and Birmingham's Cox Radio group announced it would lead an effort to purchase, deliver, and decorate a new tree for the city. http://www.bizjournals.com/birmingham/blog/2010/12/987-kiss-fm-to-replace-citys.html

Kudos to the Cox people for taking advantage of a great PR opportunity. In Kiss FM, you've got a station that continues to solidify its place in the city/community. It's a marketing move cloaked in public concern and it will pay dividends for Kiss and Cox Radio.

Promotions managers, take notes; this is the kind of out-of-the-box thinking radio needs!

The moment (~11:30AM yesterday) WAPI's Leland got off the phone with a Bham City Official, the next call was a lady in Bibb Co. offering to DONATE & DELIVER a 35' cedar for FREE. Bham City Official wouldn't return their immediately placed calls. ::)

Is the city playing favorites with radio stations?

I knew about the Kiss drive when I was in town but not the attempt by Leland at WAPI. Crazy.

Apparently the cause of the fire is something radio stations can relate to: copper thieves are suspected.

Someone at Cox Birmingham might have been owed a favor, but hey--all's fair in love and local radio promotions. Work harder and faster next time, WAPI. :D
