98.7 The Dove Debuts In Springfield

Zimmer Midwest launched Gold AC “98.7 The Dove” KTXR Springfield MO after a weekend of stunting with Christmas music.

The station is positioning as “Lite Rock Favorites” focusing on music from the 60s through 90s with core artists listed as Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, Jim Croce, The Beatles, Madonna, Paula Abdul, Elton John, Michael Bolton, and Sting. The format and branding match that of Iris Media’s “98.3 The Dove” KDVC Columbia MO, which has some connections to Zimmer. The KTXR call letters move from their legacy home on 101.3 to tie in some connection with that frequency’s former Beautiful Music and Soft AC “Gentle Giant” identity.

Kevin & Liz, who worked at least the last 20 years at KTOZ-FM and KGBX before getting sacked in iHeart's "dislocations" earlier this year, will be joining for mornings.

Another shoe has dropped here as well. The long-rumored call letter swap between KWTO-FM 98.7 and KTXR 101.3 officially happened last Thursday (8/20). Guessing the country format at 101.3 will be revamped next. Although KWTO-FM was associated with Rock 99 and 99 Hit FM before the launch of Jock 98.7, KWTO 560 was country for a number of years before flipping to talk in either late 1990 or early 1991. The call letters were often mentioned as “Keep Watching the Ozarks.”

The now KWTO-FM had been KTXR, its only set of calls until last week, for nearly 60 years. It was originally on 101.5 and was forced to move to 101.3 in 1992 to accommodate the upgrade of KARO 101.7 in Columbia, which is now KPLA 101.5. Prior to the move to 101.3, the old KTXR 101.5 could be heard on car and home stereos from Tulsa to just outside of St. Louis, a nearly 400 mile trip. At 101.3, it remains one of the strongest signals in the state, though its range is reduced from where it was 30 years ago due to other stations having been dropped in and/or upgraded over the years.

Wayne Glenn “The Old Record Collector” has announced that he will be doing his last show on 101.3 this Saturday. He has been on 101.5/101.3 since 1978.

He is, however, not going away. His show will be moving to KWTO 560 and its companion translator at 93.3 starting Saturday September 5.
