98.9 FM goes out Blazing

Stay tuned, but hip-hop is probably gone as MEC folds 98.9 FM to ..... Stay Tuned.

Yes folks, everyone, including Chris Loos and Vanya, were pink slipped, according to All Access.

Meanwhile, could this surprise news at 98.9 might have something to do with that "other" story involving a couple of guys named ____ & ____?

Ooo! I love mad libs! Let me see if I can finish that sentence:

"...MEC folds 98.9 FM to:
A paper plane
hat
tent
A taco
9 ways
a mexican peso?

Ok, who has "more?" (pun intended...)

hmm.. San Diego's Hit Music Q-99! Home of Jeff and Jer... well wherever jeff and jer go, i hope we can have some uptempo music and not the deathtempo crap clearchannel was givin us for the last year on star. UGG!

If this is true, no one saw it coming. The only problem is that 98.9 has poor coverage in North County. Same with 105.7. Those who have access to Arbitron breakouts know that the Walrus did great in the southern half of the county but sucked in North County.

It is clear that Clear Channel is now doubly screwed. With More FM out of the urban/Top 40 picture, that left Z90 and Channel 9-3-3 to reap the benefits. But now 9-3-3's well-established, successful morning show has been de-urbanized and whitewashed and square pegged into a completely different format. This means that Z90 will win big by default, while Channel 9-3-3 avoids maximizing this potential windfall. And if Rich Bera's syndicated show ends up on 9-3-3 as is rumored, it will be even better news for Z-90. Knowing this 98.9 info, it seems the best thing for 9-3-3 to do now would be to bring on the syndicated Big Boy show which was just dropped by Z-90.

if 98-9 doesn't want to spend what's needed to keep the staff they have, why would they add expense in trying to pick up j&j?

That's a good question. I'm "more" surprised that they are now going automated with their Rhythmic format, but I suspect that this move might a smokescreen for something else they have in mind.

Wait until someone here recommends dance as the replacement format. CHR would be a fantastic option to put on the 98.9 signal. The signal seems to be weaker than Channel 933 but it would still bring in a good audience because it would most likely keep the audience it has right now and add some new listeners from Channel 933. And with the on-going rumor that CBS might launch AMP Radio in SD, it would be good if CBS pulls out due to already having 2 CHR/Top 40's in town. But there's a good chance a syndicated FM Talk might land there...maybe Spanish...who knows...
