98.9 KHIT

I remember listening to it hearing "Hazy Shade of Winter" by The Bangles

I know the Station didn't last long, Who else listen to it?

Don't know the entire story behind this phase of The Radio Station Formerly Known as The Quake (KQAK, which is still fondly remembered today) but that was when it was up for sale to James Gabbert- After The Quake it became The City (still a quality format, but a bit too 'advanced' for my taste at the time) but did not fare well. Its owners may have been the ones who flipped it to KHIT and I heard they were hoping Gabbert would get blamed for it. There was a "Coalition to Save the City" when it first went up for sale trying to keep that format alive, fearing that Gabbert would turn it into another top-40 bore. It was heartbreaking hearing such an awful format on the frequency that had hosted The Quake, but thankfully that did not last long. When Gabbert finally took over he first simulcasted KOFY-AM's oldies format on it before flipping to KOFY-FM with an eclectic format similar to The City but he kept meddling and dumbing the format down so it was soon history as well.

I loved the Quake and was sad when I tuned in one day and it was the City. Was glad when KITS took a similar format. I remember KQAK playing 99 Luft Balloons months before it hit the other stations. One of my friends still has a tape of the stunting which was like "The Quake - FM 99 - Starts Monday morning at 6!"
