A couple of corrections: KEZX was never a jazz station, although their format contained some elements of what is now considered smooth jazz (Bob James, Larry Carlton, Basia etc.). From about 1982 to 1989, the format was a mix of soft rock (James Taylor, CSN, Paul Simon), folk (Gordon Lightfoot, Christine Lavin) and the above mentioned smooth jazz although that term hadn't been invented yet. They also played quite a bit of local music and even put out two double LPs called "The KEZX Album Project" that consisted totally of submissions by local artists such as Reilly and Maloney, Uncle Bonsai and Michael Tomlinson.

In many ways, KEZX was a softer version of KMTT so I suppose it would be fair to consider them a AAA station although that term also hadn't yet been invented. The granddaddy of all of these types of stations is Portland's KINK-FM.

I still have my copy of The KEZX Album Project (Volume 1). If you really wanna get a taste of the KEZX sound of the '80s, it's well worth a trip to your local vintage vinyl shop....

Jay Phillips is a KEZX vet who is still at 98.9.........
