98.9 NASH ICON becomes Warm 98.9 and all-Christmas

Easy, stop treating talent as expenses. In small to mid markets you can get away with bad pay and benefits, but in the big markets where a couple of rating points can make a big difference in revenue. A station in a top ten market has to pay and treat its talent well. Not just on air but support staff too.

So what in the bankruptcy laws will change the way they treat talent? I fail to see any connection here.

Better pay and benefits will drive them further in the hole, no?

I'm getting a Warm filling! Mark my words Monday, December 28 the return of the Best Variety of Soft Rock and the new home of the "98 at 9" on Warm 98.9 with Jordan Graye!

Actually, 250 Watts off the round building does a pretty good job of covering to 285.

Johnny, what do you mean off the round building? All 3 Cumulus/Dickey translators, 93.7, 97.9 and 98.9, are at the Richland site on the newer tower.

97.9 seems to have a much better signal than the other two. The signal problems of 93.7 and 98.9 seem likely to have been caused by their proximity to frequencies of other stations. 97.9 and 98.9 are both 250w at 995 feet above average terrain. 93.7 is 220w at 994 feet above average terrain.

What I meant was/is, empirically 250 Watts off the round building will cover out to the perimeter. I think you're correct about the relative coverage of signals with close adjacent signals. The peanut whistle gets beat up by the big guys. But when it doesn't, it will go that far. (We tried it one night)

Secondchoice has the point I believe. Until the Cloud Company overcomes its current status in the industry, it will be very hard to attract quality employees at any level. It's currently perceived as being somewhere between a joke and employer of last resort. That's a tough rep which tends to feed on itself. A format change is at least a sign of movement, whether in the right direction or not is a coin toss.

What are you talking about? Scott Lindy is one of the best program directors in the country.

Kind of like Clear Channels of some years past …

More BS. They have some of the best known people in radio. And they pay top salaries. Same with Cumulus.

Lindy may be Programming God, but Radio One with small signals put three in the top ten in November while the Cloud Company was only able to ride Bert Weiss into #10 with several killer signals. Maybe the new lady boss will let him play around a little? You can hear all of them, they ought to put something on to which the mass of residents will listen to. And, they didn't invent Bert, they inherited him in a purchase.

BigA, I truly hate to disillusion you, but (at least in 2004) they were ruthless, cruel, uncaring, and so absolutely focused on ratings and billings they fired morning dirve personalities while they wre on vacation. And sent the word for them not to come back after the vacation by some lower ranking flunkie in the mailroom, not even having guts enough to call them on the phone or doing it face-to-face.

And this I know from personal experience -- their target was a long-time friend of mine. He had also complained how they would not pay for show prep maerial; that had to come out of my guy's personal pocket. I don't think of Cheap Channels and Cloud as anything but money-grubbing opportunists.

At least with Cloud having thrown off the dead wood of the Dickeys they might make a go of it.

What makes you think it's any different any place else? I was just speaking with a friend of mine who is a teacher in the public schools. Replace "ratings" with "test scores," and you described life as a teacher today.

Programming a milquetoast AC on a 250 watt translator strikes me as being a very poor idea. Granted, *anything* should be able to generate better ratings than "Nash Icon."

Good luck trying to peel suburban listeners away from 104.7 The Fish and inside-the-perimeter listeners away from B98.5. It didn't work with Journey 97-9, and it won't work this time, either.

You are right about 100.5. Before going to 12.5kw in October 2005, the signal was awful at 3kw. I couldn't even receive it on a portable radio near the candelabra at 1800 Briarcliff Road and that is only a few miles from the 100.5 tower on Peachtree Plaza. I really wonder what the playlist will be like come January on Warm 98.9. So what format hole is left...variety hits? Will this go on the new 101.1 translator?

IMHO: In a market as spread out as Atlanta, the translators are only useful as an "experiment" or on the air laboratories. 680's translator is most likely the best. Even it is limited by 93.7 in Ellijay. If a translator format catches on as a nitch will there be enough billings for for a full market signal? I believe the only reason Cumulus has so many translators is to keep them out of the hands of some class D operators like 1160.
