98.9 Sign off on Friday

Just heard 98.9 is saying they are signing off on Friday.

They've been promoting all week that they end Friday.
Bob FM is running spots asking 98.9 listeners to give them a try.
No mention on the KUT web site. They still say taking over 98.9 early 2013.

BTW-- Apologies to early tipster "Dick Tater" for ever doubting him.

Bob can go....oh, never mind. I've got KONO on my phone and that will do for the moment.

Likewise, props to Mr. Tater as well from here.

According to Andi McKay they will go to 7 pm and Tom Kent will broadcast til midnight.

Around 7:20 am or so Bo Chase told the listeners they lost their lease, and the last day is Friday.

It will be one of two things after 12 AM Saturday Morning.

1. Sound of Silence Format (I am not talking about the song by Simon and Garfunkel)

or

2. Temporary simulcast of KUT 90.5 until 1/1/2013

If they didn't lose their lease, they would probably air True Oldies Channel only until 1-1-2013.

austin radio lost again. 107.7 the hawk, mix 93.3 kqfx fox 96.5, oldies 103, z 102.3, 98.9 austins greatest hits. back to out of town staions , pods, cassetee tapes, cd.s.

With apologies to those of you looking for true oldies, this is a marginally programmed oldies station at best. They're damn lucky to have had Bo Chase on air--I think they would have been smarter making this move musicall when they put "The Talker" on the air. There's an appetite for music here, not second tier pre-recorded political talk shows. Bo's a solid talent, though a bit of a "musicologist" at times...

While Bo is great, the rest of this bunch is a steaming pile of crap. Hopefully, they're not being absorbed by KUT. A no talent PD with zero format experience isn't a good choice for an eclectic market like Austin. Maybe in Swampbucket, FLA, but not here.

While BOB FM isn't a "true" oldies station, Crash Kelley does an solid job presenting a great variety hits format, playing deeper cuts and serving plenty of AC, Classic Hits, Classic Rock, and oldies fans. The playlist on BOB is deep, unpredictable, and the imaging IS creative and topical. I would have enjoyed a JACK FM vs BOB FM showdown.

And Bob doesn't play songs from deep inside the lake (WTF is that anyway?)...

It's kind of odd that we haven't heard what follows at midnight. I would think that if it was a KUT simulcast that would have been released in the statements from KUT.

What follows at midnight will most likely be static. This is what happened to KTRU in Houston when U of H purchased the station. It went off of the air for about a month, after which U of H began testing about a week before the launch of "Classical 91.7". I would assume 98.9 will follow the same path while everything is transferred to UT's control.

UT doesn't stand much to gain from keeping the station on the air over the holidays. Listening routines are disrupted anyway. And they're not going to convert that many oldies listeners into KUTX listeners They can always use KUT to let listeners know when KUTX is ready for them to tune in.

Andi McKay just announced this may be her last day on the air. She is not sure and she went on to say, "You know about as much as I do".
She then went on to say Bo Chase In The Morning will be on the air tommorrow morning and that she may join him in the morning if she is not going to doing her air shift on Friday.

Andi McKay gave the reason she is not sure if she will be on the air tomorrow. This is because there is no set time when the new owners will own the station tomorrow. I guess this to mean as soon
as the check clears the bank. She said Austin has welcomed her to the city.
I look forward to hearing her back on the air tomorrow afternoon.

She went on to say she likes Austin and wants to stay in Austin. She will be looking to get
a gig at another station in town. So, stay tuned as they say.

Andi McKay just made this announcement.
She said she will be on the air tomorrowat 10:00 am but she said she dose not know how long she will be able to be on the air.
She said, "That depends on what time we hand over the keys of the station over to the fine folks over at the University of Texas".

I second that.

That is what I also heard. I hope they play "Ballad for A Girl in Buchannon" by Chicago.

It's long and jazzy!
Clocks in at around 13 minutes!

She just announced on the air about UT taking over at around 2:00 PM.

Earlier, she said that it was a business decisions to sell the station and UT got themselves a great deal on 98.9. She said has no problems with BMP selling the station because of this.

Now Nassour can listen to KONO and Wildav can listen to cassettes. The other 3 listeners of 98.9 will find a new home.
