98.9 The Big Talker

Does anyone know if "98.9 The Big Talker" has changed to "True Oldies Channel" fomat?
Just tuned past this morniong and this is what I hear. Also, the web site indicates this as well at www.989bigtalker.com just looking for confirmation!

James
Austin, TX

I just tuned in and they are simulcasting Oldies on both frequencies. An early flip. they usually wait till Labor Day Weekend.

Its about time! They should just leave the 2 simulcasting.

I'm listened to the Sean Rama show from last Friday on the podcasts here:

http://989bigtalker.com/podcast/

Last Friday he said he was taking a one week vacation and there would be a best of Sean Rima show
all this week... He also said there would be a fill-in gust for two days this week.. It appears they did
not give Sean Rima any notice they were canceling his show before before his vacation started!

Also, Andy Dean was going to join 98.9 The Big talker this week:

Sounds like 92.5 & 98.9 simulcast will end in the coming weeks. What format will be on 92.5?

From 92.5 Facebook-
Great news, folks: 92.5 The True Oldies Channel can now be heard on 98.9 as well. We'll be switching to 98.9 entirely in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned to the station and our Facebook page for more updates. Thanks for listening!

BMP should have simulcast KTFM from SA. This would have covered both metros and given 96.7 and 102.3 some competition.

Well at least I won't have to change my presets in the truck. I'll probably listen to oldies as often as I listened to the talker (which was only when there nothing else interesting on....) at least I can somewhat identify with the oldies, had trouble identifying with the anger and angst that seemed to be coming out of the talkers.

And besides now maybe I can listen to the Horn, couldn't pick it up where I am in the Southern part of Burnet County and when I go over to Georgetown etc, so that'll be ok too and Rima will fit in well at 550 in SA

The good news here, indeed, is the simulcast of The Horn on 1260. 104.9 has so little penetration in Williamson County that it might as well be in San Antonio. It's not a solution to their problems, as 1260 is invisible at night unless you're on top of it, but it will help in the daytime.

OTOH, you gotta ask...how long was the Talker on? Was it a year? And the mountain was "too high to climb"? Just another case of a company not being able/willing to stick with a short-term loss for long-term gain. At the same time, it's to Border's credit that no one was shown the door....that's a nice change.

First, if they're going to keep the oldies channel with Scott Shannon, there's no need for their an OM/PD. Bet he's gone by Labor Day.

Sean Rima to SA? Interesting. If they give him more time than they did when they moved Woody from KTFM over to KTSA down here, maybe. But it's likely a temporary move and they'll shove him out, too.

Border cut staff in February, if I recall correctly. They've been operating with a sales manager also handling appearances, dj hops and more. And on air, he's horrible (check out the Sat night abortion from the Iron Cactus sometime).

Should have put the station that bill's the most (the Horn) on 98.9. This would have made more sense, covered more area, and given listeners north AND south a better signal. Heck, it may have given those of us in the New Braunfels area a shot at decent sports...on FM!?

Border seems to be an operator that shoots before they know the target (like the FM mess in Austin), and doesn't have the resources, knowledge, or manpower to achieve much top 10 wise.

It would have been great to have the horn jump to 98.9 and put the oldies on 104.9. Wow, what a concept a sports talk station with good programming that everyone in this market and surrounding areas could actually pick up and listen to...ah, well we can always dream on.

BMP flipped 98.9 from Regional Mexican KHHL to Talk KXBT in late 2009, around October or November.

In response to an earlier post regarding a KTFM simulcast, I too would like to have seen that, but at the same time, I understand that not many people in Austin would care about a station from San Antonio. I also agree that putting ESPN on 98.9 and oldies on 104.9 would have been a wiser move, but it's a convoluted situation. To the best of my knowledge, BMP holds the licenses of KXXS, KXBT and KTXX, but only operates KXXS and KXBT. Simmons Media controls programming and sales on KTXX, so moving the Horn over to 98.9 would have been a complicated situation.

I'd also like to bring up a point from the Austin360 article on 92.5 having a signal "...especially strong in Central Texas’ heavily Hispanic areas." I assume the reporter is talking about SE Travis and Bastrop counties. KXXS has an app to relicense to Sunset Valley with transmitter on West Lake Hills, which would focus more on Austin itself and throw a less-than-desirable signal over the eastern suburbs. Do they plan on sticking with ESPN Deportes after the upgrade?

The point you make about the 92.5 upgrade didn't factor into my thoughts.

Maybe the "big talker" moves to 92.5 if there's enough "noise" made in the market by the "phantom cume" that the station claims to reach--kinda like "we heard you, so we built a new tower/transmitter for you...and here's the programming".

Will Beck and Ramsey end up on 1370? I sure would prefer Levin on 590, even after Ward stops yacking.

Wait. That makes too much sense. Border c/wouldn't do such a thing, would they? I am sure there's a consultant with shiny wingtips calling these shots.

I seriously doubt people in Austin care where the station originates from. If your statement was true, then why are so many people streaming and listening to satellite radio?

Had it been a music-only simulcast of KTFM, then maybe you'd have something. However, the imaging (regardless of what you say "saradio1") is...third rate, esp compared to MIX 96.1, The Beat, and even KHFI/Austin.

I'd hate to be around the Eisenhour Rd offices of BMP if this KTFM "simulcast" ever got off the ground. The less-than-talented VP/English Programming's head would have exploded (need for another surgery).

My point: The Horn on 98-9 or a new CHR would have been a better choice than satellite oldies. Simulcast 92-5 and 104-9 (for north and south listening) and put your big $$ station/talent on the big signal.

If your argument is based on that premise, then why bother using an Austin frequency to simulcast a San Antonio station at all when you can just stream it online? I could see the advantage maybe simulcasting in the short term just to get something going, but eventually they'd be better off launching an Austin-centric CHR, even if they were duplicating KTFM's music logs.
