98.9 WSPA vs. The Walk

I was listening in the car this afternoon to 98.9 FM (south of exit 11 on GA-400.) to try to hear The Walk. I was hearing AC music and my instinct told me it was WSPA "Magic" out of Greenville. I was right, as "Action Jackson" confirmed it was, indeed, "Magic 98.9".

So, it The Walk's signal that lacking? And, if so, why are they placing it there instead of 97.9, which is much stronger and has a wider range?

98.9 WSPA is an absolute flamethrower. Easily the most powerful signal from Greenville. They really have an amazing reach - I've gotten them past Columbia, SC and in Augusta, GA before. Decent signal in the Charlotte market.

Not really surprised it interferes with 98.9 around Atlanta. Was there not a better frequency for Cumulus to put a translator on?

Right. Which makes it, in some areas, the third (maybe fourth) AC signal in Charlotte. Alpharetta, GA is a good 110 miles away from Anderson/Greenville.

I was getting a surprising amount of spit between Duluth and Suwanee. Kinda like Rock100.5 on a morning when the DXing is good.

The thing is, it's actually on the eastern side of Greenville (in neighboring Spartanburg county, near the line, which is what makes the signal better than the rest of the GSP stations in Charlotte) - that's what I find impressive that it's making it as far as Alpharetta.

I think translators should only be used for weak or daytime only am radio stations. 1010 could use one. I like the R&B Oldies!

WSPA is faily strong all over Charlotte as mentioned and also to it's north & west. Driving northeast into Hickory, NC and even Mt Airy, NC (almost VA), WSPA can be received until 98.7 in Greensboro starts to cover it up. Its 100KW transmitter is on a 3000 ft mountain (above sea level) near the NC/SC state line north of Spartanburg. That gives it a high clear broadcast in most directions except to the north toward Asheville into the higher mountains. As one moves outward toward GA from SC the terrain is lower near the Sav River at the SC/GA line, then it very slightly rises again as you move toward ATL. That makes for great conditions for a long range signal of it to the south west.

WSPA-FM is on Hogback Mountain. Been there and also saw the WSPA-TV site when with a SBE meeting there.
