98 Rock Suxs

Folks, lets get one thing straight and something I think we ALL can agree upon. Back in the day, 95WYNF was one of the greatest rock radio stations on the planet. This station executed everything flawlessly. Sales and revenue were strong, the programming was magnificant and of course the real winning component, THE JOCKS!!!!! Wow, Charlie Logan, Scotty Phillips, Ron & Ron, Russ Albums, Capone, the list goes on and on.

Yes, the station is still "alive", check it all out at www.95ynf.com
And yes you can still by the clothes, the coffee mugs, the other goodies.

Anyone who is anyone in radio knows of this legendary rock radio station. Excellent and expanded playlists, true all request shows, great imaging, tight boardwork, you name it, it was all there. And a mammoth signal to boot. Before all the other crap stations, LPFM's invaded the FM band, this signal boomed and collided with Zeta 4 in Miami and WTNT in Tallahassee. All points in between they rocked.

I was an intern for Carey Curelop in the summer of 1985 and this was a great time to enjoy radio in the Bay area. 98 Rock sounded cool too, but everyone chased 95YNF. Oh, and Q105 always sounded great back then too.

Do yourself a favor, bolt on (upside down of course) a license plate, grab a beefy shirt or thong and wear your 95YNF colors proudly...........

YNF was good in the 80s..but to me played too much Floyd,Zep,Rush, etc etc.. and didnt play enough Metal.......Ron and Ron ruled the mornings and was great... Then 98Rock came along and played New Rock first with alot of Metal... 98Rock beat the Hell out of YNF (outside morning drive at first) on ratings and revenue.....and YNF was known as the RedNeck Rock Station....! 98Rock played what was Hot and New back in the early 90s..and YNF self destructed. YNF is the Father of Tampa Bay Rock, but 98Rock came and Kicked its Ass all over the radio with Pure Hard Rock!

These weekly Countdowns are from many different charts and what I would play
on heavy rotation..at least 8 of these per hour every 3 hours so people would hear
New Music first...

LMAO@ 97X cheese Wiz station! btw you forgot Judas Priest Which is #9 selling new album and Motley is #3 this week.. Whitesnakes went as high as #2 on 1 chart and billboard #4....Alice Cooper's wont come out for a few weeks..same with Extreme... Then you have AC/DC coming out which will sell like popcorn....and Metallica... Just cause some bands are Hair or Metal from the 80s...if they sell and rock.. you play them!! You expand your listeners to include the 35-44 age group. The 25-33 age group will stick with 97X cause they grew up on alternative nerd rock...while 18-24 listeners grew up on more hardcore bands such as Disturbed,Godsmack,Statix X,Slipknot,Kid Rock ..etc which shows on the top 25 current tunes list...and btw its not my personal list...its from 6 sites..my personal #1 is the new Motley Crue Song "Murther F'ker of the Year"

If you want to hear New Hard Rock First with some Metal... http://www.rock945.com/ (KHTQ)

If you want to hear Mostly Hard Classic Rock/Metal and Some New Rock...http://www.94rock.com/main.html

btw KHTQ (94.5) rating has been 5.2 average for many years now... should tell ya something about what to play on a radio station of todays rock.

Check out both these stations playlist and last 10 played!

98Rock has 1 main problem... the Bad Marketing of the PDs in the market of Clear Channel and Hardin... The PD (DOUBLEDOWN) loves the 90s Alt scene and went to highschool in the mid 90s so he grew up on that style of music. That's what 98Rock plays... 90s music (93-00) and that's what makes this station a 2.6 avg rating. Until 98Rock gets a New PD who looks at what makes Ratings and $$$$, this station will continue to suffer from a Bad Investment......unless the PD tries to do what the top rated rock markets with 5-6 shares are doing.. and thats "More New Rock Per Hour" and a more ""Harder Edge that People want to hear"". Play very little 90s bands and return some hair bands and metal from the later 80s early 90s like Anthrax,Pantera,Megadeth,Iron Maiden,Poison,Skid Row,Whitesnake,Ratt, etc..... The "Safe Recognizable Songs of the 90s format" Is Not Safe...and again the ratings show it. People are tired of hearing the same songs.

Hardin is stuck in the 90s!

List of songs that 98 should play. All of these songs are great....

HAHAHA...

We should mix both of our playlists TOGETHER on 102.5!!!!!!!

We could have a Sevendust tune go into a Steve Martin bit, throw in a little Slipnot and Metallica, and then throw on some Monty Python.... ;D

That actually would be better for a 102.5

98 Rock though (since its a pure rock station) would be mostly New Rock. Remember aside from joking around, the top 30 isnt my personal wish list of music... I dont really like Offspring, but I would play them cause they are in the top 30 and its a decent song. Anyways I would love to see Killswitch, Opiate for the masses, and couple others on the list of top 30....but its not spinned enough everywhere to make it.

98rock suxs cause they are alternative minded music wise..and no good shows including morning drive. They are stuck in the 90s and they dont play a hard enough edge thats out there in other markets.

98rock back in the day (early 90s) during the Greg Mull Era....was 1 of the hardest rock stations in america...hitting people with more new rock...song after song after song beating out YNF outside their morning drive. That's whats missing with 98rock today. They're 90s minded. MD and Hardin stuck in the 90s and the ratings sux for it. Also where are the shows?

What would I do then?

I would Hit People with a Harder Edge of New Rock Per Hour... You beat 97X (not at their own music) but more New Music. Music like on the top 30 list.. and play them 8 times per hour out of the 12ish songs per hour. Other 4 songs would be past music from Disturbed,Godsmack,Shinedown, or any big hit during the last few years...also throw in a big hit from the 80s metal era (hairband or metal) that you dont hear anymore.....cause when you listen to a pure rock station.. you want to hear New Rock, and also a song that you dont hear that often anymore if at all.

Would I play any 90s grunge? Of course....but nowhere near whats played now on 98rock and WJRR... you might hear a Bush song, Collective Soul, WhiteZombie + others every few hours but not 3-5 90s bands per hour that you hear now. Safe recognizable songs are Not Safe.. they make the listener think...ahh not this song again and they change the station unless its a Metallica song. People will always love to hear Sanitarium,Master of Puppets, One, etc...

What else would I show wise? Well morning drive right now it locked in on Lex and Terry...even though I really dont care for them.. its a CC thing. They are on alot of CC stations. But I would get with my management team and do things like a daily top 10 countdown at night (maybe 9-10pm)...and also a top 25 weekly during the day 11am-1pm on Sundays (when people have radio on at peak times, at the beach listening, etc.
Also have a ALL REQUEST HOUR Mon-Fri from 10pm-11pm maybe fridays do a 4 gasam...where 3 people would get to put on 4 rock songs during that time frame.
Also alot want to hear a Hairband/Metal show like WJRR has (and its doing well) for 2 hrs on Saturday night..maybe 10-midnight. Then Midnight you have the Pit for 2 hrs till 2am!

You got to make a Rock station enjoyable and want to listen to. Way to do that is make the listener want to listen to ya by getting them involved with the station and the DJS and their personalitys along with the station. Play more New Rock.. Play songs that were Hits that you dont hear anymore. And Lets Rock!

Sorry for rant everyone...I know I ranted a few times, but not everyone reads all the way back to page 1.. :)

Hey Scott, how many damn morning shows has 98 rock had over the past few years???? It seems like they have a new show every 6 months or so. Also, the 98 rock website NEVER works.....

I check it out every once in awhile... mainly to see their top 20 music playlist... btw thanks to alot of you that sent me privete email saying I should work as a MD... or would love to hear the music I list.. but like I tell everyone.. the music is out there in other markets... but not how I would do it. I would Rock this town!

98Rock probably just did their best music rotation for 1 hr in 15 years from 12pm-1pm. Disturbed,2 of 5 Finger Death Punch,Dragonforce,Korn,Pantera. Of course it was cause of Mayhem Fest...but was decent to turn on 98rock without changing the station in 3 min.

Geez dude, when will you get it? 80's hair & 90's alt DO NOT mesh!

Rock stations net 2 & 3 shares due to poor reporting (non-PPM markets). It has nothing to do with a refusal to play Poison or Whitesnake.

90's is more recent & current than the 80's. Hair band lovers are listening to the classic rock stations already.

G

I dont think you get it. Of course you dont mix 90s and 80s.. its 2 different styles. 98rock should play more New Active Rock mostly and only mix in some 80s over 90s cause dude...the 90s have been played nonstop for over a decade and people that like hairbands and metal dont listen to Classic Rock...they listen to Talk Radio. Classic Rock is a different generation of 70s early 80s Rock.

BTW you go to every ratings format in each city and see Active Rock beats out Alternative Rock in every market. People dont want to hear the crap of the 90s cause it was mostly crap...and only good in its day cause it was a change..and people like change every now and then.
