100000watts.com is reporting that 980 AM in Winston-Salem is now silent...again. Can anyone fill me in on why 980 can't stay on the air. Also, why does GHB change call letters every other month?
They didn't have a signal anyway.Johnny Caudle said:100000watts.com is reporting that 980 AM in Winston-Salem is now silent...again. Can anyone fill me in on why 980 can't stay on the air. Also, why does GHB change call letters every other month?

I need to add a little more to that.Matt Smith said:Who owns 980..How much power..where's it at? Where in the world did ya come up with WTIX calls
The station is owned (through a subsidiary) by George H. Buck, hence "GHB Broadcasting". The city of license is Winston-Salem. FCC Records say it is licensed for 1000 watts daytime and 69 watts at night. It originally had the call letters WAAA.
Stations owned by George Buck are notorious for swapping call letters between themselves. For example, when he purchased WIST in Charlotte back in the 1980's, he moved the call letters to a station he owned in another city. In the 1990's, he LMA'ed 1480 (The old WAME), and moved the WIST calls back to that station, and moved the WAME calls to the station he owns on 550 in Statesville. Then, he bought 106.1 and put the calls WIST-FM on it. Later, he quit doing the LMA on 1480 and got new calls of WNMX for 106.1. At the same time, he purchased 98.3 in Thomasville, NC and moved the WIST calls there. The guy likes to hold onto a nice set of call letters if he thinks they might have some use to him later.
Through another subsidiary, he likely has ownership interest in the WTIX-FM in New Orleans, and moved the call sign to WAAA when he purchased it.
Well, that's the story....
