985 The Sports Hub ratings nosedive..Why ?

They literally lost half of their audience as they go from a 5.2 to a 2.6 and 800,000 + cume to 400,000. Since the programming didn't change it HAS to be a PPM glitch. If I was CBS Radio I'd be PISSED and demand a meeting with arbitron for an explanation. I would also hold next months check to the ratings service, until the problem is rectified.

...and that's why you don't work in radio. There's a perfectly logical explanation: No more Bruins/Stanley Cup coverage. Watch for their ratings to rise again once the NFL season starts.

WEEI has been stale for at least the last 5 years, so WBZ-FM is my choice. Not to mention the better signal.

I miss Tanguay and Zolak.
 
Where is that show by show chart that we've seen for the past couple of months? Or is that only made public when 98.5 is ahead?

Anyway, LAUROJRM, here goes:

I prefer D&C because it's a sports show. T&R is a comedy show along the lines of Opie and Anthony or Imus in the old days. There's nothing wrong with T&R, I just prefer a sports show.

Both station's mid-day shows are abominable. Moving Dale Arnold was the screw-up of the decade.

Long before there was a Sports Hub, I hated Felger. I have not listened to one second of his show on 98.5. If it had been Tony Mazz and almost anyone else(not LJ, Sterns, Mustard, etc.) I would have listened. But I can't stand Felger. He earned his well deserved nickname of DB on WEEI, by just making preposterous statements to get a reaction. Has he changed his act? I don't really get the "younger and fresher" term. Mazz and Felger have both been around for over 20 years.
I don't think 'EEI made the Big Show any better with the format change and the addition of Holley. What they should have done was to eliminate the bad co-hosts and only use the good ones like Buckley, McAdam, Bob Ryan, Curran, Maxwell, and a few others.

I don't usually listen at night, but for some odd reason Mikey Adams has always made me laugh. I think it's because his jokes are just so lame that I chuckle. I'm glad Mike joined the Big Show. The chemistry between Ordway and Holley wasn't working. They definitely needed a buffer.

I've given up on weekends. Both stations are horrendous. What is really bad about weekends is that you get the bottom of the barrell for callers. The callers that they won't let on the air or that get blown up during the week call all of the weekend shows.
 
Guys, just be thankful you don't live down here in Philly. Both sports stations, WIP and 97.5 The Fanatic, are dreadful. From the imaging down to the hosts, both WEEI and WBZ-FM are miles ahead of them.

I still listen to both 850 and 98.5 online quite a bit, and for me it's 98.5 most of the time. Art, neither station has a full time sports morning show. WEEI has a right-wing political show that dabbles in sports and the Sports Hub has a lifestyle show that weaves in sports. T&R are much more entertaining and less polarizing. Just personal preference.

I agree that both midday shows are sub-par, but when I listen to M&M, all I can think is "vacation fillins. When do the real hosts come back?" Advantage...98.5.

I was a P1 Big O listener for years, but I tended to listen less when he had the "painful" co-hosts with him. Now with this new format, the show is unlistenable. I've always liked Felger because he'll pull no punches. Unlike a lot of hosts who are just unabashed homers...Felger will occasionally challenge the listener with an unpopular opinion. He always bases it in fact and usually has the stats to back him up, even if he's not always right. It's refreshing change of pace.

I've always been a Mike Adams fan, even though he gets a little silly now and then. Some nights though he goes way over the top and leans on the same old crutches (Yankee bashing, girl oogling etc.) I kinda like DA. He gets a little dry at times but he prepares well. This one's a tie.

The only thing that will make WEEI better is exchange ESPN Radio, and put on (the new) Yahoo Sports Radio Network". That might make them better
It's not my final, it's up to Program Management.
Other than that, I'll still listen to them.
Two shows I like on "Sports Hub" weeknights 6pm Baseball Reporters, and overnights Fox Sports Radio. I don't get a chance to listen to them weekdays at my weekday job because they have on Magic 106.7 on.
 
Sporting News Radio is better than ESPN Radio?

Where am I?

I'd rather listen to 12 hours of the new 1090 than a minute of sporting talk radio (yahoo whatever they are calling it)

I don't think you've listened to them lately. Granted they are still very right wing( which I also happen to be) but they did away with the "Headlines, Headlines, Headlines" segment of the show which generated a lot of the political talk. Once in a while, if the lead news story dictates it (Whitey Bulger, or Obama's approval rating, for instance) they will get into some non sports or political talk, but usually only for a segment and then it's back to sports. I think they were told to curtail the politics a while ago.

Toucher and Rich seem to be the zany morning guys. The only one that really knows anything about sports is Jon Wallach and they just destroy him at every turn.

One thing I have noticed is that there's a huge amount of schadenfreude toward WEEI. Were they a bunch of obnoxious jerks to the others in the industry when they were on top? I remember laughing when DEC went down. That was a company that had a case on themselves.
 
Whoa! I'd like to see if WILD will come back to the FM band! And I believe that one of these days, WODS will switch to Spanish sports talk.

They are making big money and aren't particularly skilled broadcasters (except BigO'). There are other factors involved in their success and I think everybody knew that.
There's also been some internal strife but that's the case anyplace the Andelmans have worked? What happened to their revenge book?

Nobody gets too charged up--vacations-- over summer ratings. Fall book will tell a lot this year.
 
I believe that this 2.6 is one of the higher rated CBS sports station's ratings. I think Pittsburgh just spiked to a 3.1 and Detroit's 6+ ratings are the only CBS markets doing better with sports. 98.5 has been carrying the Pats the past couple years and WEEI kicked their ass anyway. Even 660 WFAN generally resides in the mid to upper 2s. 850 is sports radio.

You're getting caught up in the 6+ overall ratings. The Sports Hub leads handily in the younger demos in all dayparts, and has for awhile now. These are the demos sought by advertisers, not the 55+ numbers enjoyed by WEEI. They help to pad 850's overall numbers, but they're lagging behind in the demos that count. WEEI used to be dominant with 25-54 men. Not anymore. Oh, and if WEEI is so great, why did their demos go DOWN despite the fact they have the Sox and they've been on a tear for most of the summer, huh?

Look, 98.5 targeted all their programming toward the Bruins the last few books and it paid dividends for them. They are now the Bruins station....and WEEI haplessly tried to play catch-up. Its natural for them to have a letdown after that. And guess what...all those listeners the Sports Hub lost...didn't go to WEEI! Like I mentioned, WEEI went down too!

Looking ahead, WEEI has a LOT to worry about. Pats are about to start up on 98.5. The Sports Hub will get a spike out of that. Then the B's get going again soon after. Electronic ratings measurement LOVES sports play by play, and 98.5 will have a lot of it. WEEI will start out OK, particularly if the Sox have a deep playoff run, but if the NBA lockout goes into the season, WEEI has nothing but their talkers (which are already lagging behind 98.5) well into the new year. Not a pretty picture.

This sounds vaguely familiar. Oh yeah, Obama said the same thing about Standard and Poors. Funny, he never had a problem with their ratings before.
