What direction would they go? Talk, perhaps? What about an AC format to go after the River or country? I know a number of you having been wanting another country station for some time now.

So what's left to try? Polka music? Golf Channel simulcast?

I may be in the minority, but I enjoyed the Kim-FM '80s format.

So let me pose this question: What station should be targeting me as a listener (white male, early 40's, native Memphian, product of the public schools, college educated, married with kids, gainfully employed, no tattoos)?

Curious minds want to know....

I am betting my money on talk.

What kind? We already have TWO stations with right-wing babble with 600 and Flinn's Folly 87.7. What we NEED here is an all-news format, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for that one.

Well, i can't see them going country, rock, or soul. I don't think they would compete with them self. They tried A/C, rap, and stuff like that. I don't think they would do top 40 or religous, doesn't leave much left except talk.

All-news is quite an expensive format to do. In other words, it can't be done on the cheap. Plus, the only real success stories with all-news are primarily in the top ten markets. Could it really work in Memphis? Not that it shouldn't be done, but whoever tries it needs to do their homework on it first.

I like that format as well. What I like to see happen, and you'll probably have to file this in the never will happen file. ;D I like to see 98.9 bring back the smooth jazz format. I think if it's done right, kept local, and the right music selection, it will be a good station. Memphis has a bed of great music and I think this format may be one of the areas that it might work at.

Smooth Jazz is the only thing with any sizable audience the 98.9 license has seen since it moved into town. The issue with going back is that the format has not pulled the same numbers with the introduction of PPM. Would that apply to Memphis I don't know. The format fits well in between V101 & WRBO. Citadel has 2 options. Go up against an established station or try a niche format. 98.9 has failed both times it tried to compete directly with other stations. If Citadel wants to do a costly head to head battle it not going to work out with a station that that has ZERO energy or creativity put into it. I keep expecting to hear the automation lock up and no one even notice.

I wonder if a LOCAL CCM/Christian Rock station would do here now NOT AFR, KLove/Air1, Salem,WAY-FM . Maybe I am wrong but I seem to remember WGSF doing "OK" when it was on AM-1210 before Flinn. A decent signal and LOCAL! WHAL seems to do OK.

David,

I have wondered the same. KLTY and WDJC are good examples of what CCM can do when done right. With K-Love on a fairly decent stick in town now I am not sure if anyone would try to split the audience up and make a go at it.

I'll try to come see you at your gig Saturday if I stay in town this weekend. I may blaze a trail down to the south after work Friday. Thanks for the invite.

I'd love to see a local CCM station come back to Memphis, but I wouldn't trust Citadel to do it and stay with it. With 98.9 going through so many format changes you'd never know how long it would last. Along with that I don't trust any secular ownership group to do a CCM format and stay with it, even if they manage to do it right. It might be great while it lasts, but you never know when they'll decide to change to something else they think will make more money.

I don't know if there's enough real talent to bolster a CCM station in Memphis.

I disagree with anotherguy. Having worked for KLove and Clear Channel, I'll tell you I trust the CC heirarchy INFINITELY more than the KLove heirarchy. So long as you could make money with it, I'd take Citadel doing it in a heartbeat.

Sorry not the "WORM" you I am. Just an old nickname I used for my account, and then realized there really was a DTW back in the day….

I know EXACTLY what you mean JR!
I made it out before EMF made their Memphis appearance. Although I did realize that with the paycheck I was making at KSUD I could not support my bad habit - commonly knows as eating for survival! ( BTW neither does my Divinity Degree from seminary either  )

I think I might disagree with you there. I can immediately think of some folks that may be cajoled into possibly helping out - Rick Tarrant and Rob Grayson come to mind right away. Maybe a couple more.

DTW,

When were you at KSUD? I did Sunday mornings over there from 1997-2000.
