99.1 Format Change

Sounds like cumbia station KFZO "El Cumbiaso 99.1" has flipped to another Hurban format for the Dallas-Fort Worth market, "Reggaeton y Mas" with no moniker yet.

At around 10:00 hour, I tune to this station and I hear Amerie - "One Thing", and Daddy Yankee - "Gasolina". Will there be a competition against Casa 106.7?

Christ, that stations done how many flips over the years?? I remember when 99.1 had a decent format with Z-Rock, before all the "mexican nonsense".

If true, it would beat Clear Channel to the punch, as there's been much speculation about them flipping one of their DFW properties to Hurban, as they did in Houston with KLOL (Mega 101.)

If CC was indeed planning Hurban in DFW, they might want to launch it quickly in order to strangle 99.1's new baby in the cradle.

99.1 has been Jazz KJZY, Z-Rock KDZR, Tejano KHCK, and the apparently just departed Cumbia format on KFZO.

And Z-Rock flopped. And the "Mexican nonsense" you ridicule? Hispanic oriented formats are a GROWTH market. Anglo oriented formats are a SHRINKING market. Comprende?

Cleburne i think but when Kick FM went off the air in early April 2004 when Univision bought them out the signal is now not that strong

The reason I made the comment is simple: This market is reaching oversaturation for latin radio. Its frankly worse than listening to the mess CC has froth upon us as well IMHO. No offense, but its one of the reasons I bought a sirius and pay my 12.95/mo for decent,excellent sound quality in all formats, not just "anglo". In fact, dont assume that being "anglo" has anything to do with it.

Second, I agree Z Rock dropped the ball due to many issues including horrible low powered frequencies (not just Dallas mind ya), poor local market managment/sales, changing music taste at the time(Alternative Rock) and ABC Radio (who ran the whole shooting match)for not keeping up the rotation.

Lastly, who cares about dave...:p

Over in Wise County (the one west of Denton County), north of Decatur. That puts it about 60 miles northwest of downtown Dallas, or probably a little over 50 miles from where you are. And with a tower that's 1150' (considerably less than the ones at Cedar Hill used by most of the other stations), they're at a real disadvantage, and have been since they signed on back in the '80's. If your office were in Denton or Trophy Club, let's say, you'd get a really good signal. But virtually all of Dallas County has some kind of problems with 99.1's signal.

The previous poster's choice to term it "Mexican nonsense" is unfortunate.

But it is fair to note that while the Hispanic radio market is growing overall, the 99.1 frequency has not seen growth in its audience within this market. The reason is pretty simple: their signal is really, really lousy -- even by the standards of the other DFW rimshot FM stations, all of which broadcast from much taller towers.

As Hispanic targeted formats are now running on much better signals at other frequencies (especially 94.1 and 107.9), it seems that 99.1 is really just redundant for reaching this market.

They need to either put this station on a taller tower or they need to change the format to something that would target the suburban audiences that they can reach with their current mediocre signal.

Otherwise, each new format on this frequency will fail as the previous attempts have.

First off,im not a racist, trust me on that. If I was, I wouldnt be engaged to a beautiful latina doll nor would I have friends of every race,creed,color,religion or sexual preference either. Where my issue lies is that this market becoming oversaturated in "mexican" radio, and we all know from english formats that the oversaturation of one format will eventually drive listeners away. My though is why not take a shot and put out an "Afro-Carribe", "Puerto Rican" or "Cubano" station on the air in that frequency. Heck, why not another language, like indian or vietnamese? Last time I checked, This market had a pretty decent sized population of folks from Southeast Asia.

The point I was trying to make was this: Why not allow another group to come in and broadcast and keep the oversaturation to a minimum? Not that much to ask

Lastly, Dave isnt a racist, thats a harsh words. Daves views I would say are a bit narrow in scope. But, he is entitled to his views as well as we all are.
 
What a idiot, you might be engaged to a Latina but apparently you just another clueless white guy.
The Hurban format isn't Mexican radio.
There are other Races that are Latino besides Mexicans.
Reggaeton was started in Panama.
Perfected in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
Now most comes out of the Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in New York and in Miami.
Pitbull is Cuban American
Baby Bash is Mexican-American
Frankie J is Mexican
Daddy Yankee and Ivy Queen are Puerto Rican
La Factoria is from Panama

The Hurban format is LATINO and aimed at Multi Generational Latinos.
It is NOT MEXICAN Radio.
Mexican Regional and Norteno Stations are Mexican Radio

Tropical Formats are playing Salsa and Merengue which consists of Mostly CUBAN artists such as the late Celia Cruz, Willie Colon and many others.

So you might want to ask your LATINA GirlFriend to educate you on the Different Latino Cultures so you don't look like a dumbass on these forums.
