99.1 kfzo history

Hey Guys:

Can anybody tell me the history of KFZO 99.1 FROM 2004 TO NOW?

I am a little confused about the format history of 99.1?

Thanks
T.J.

Tejano KHCK "Kick"
Cumbia KFZO "El Cumbiaso 99.1"
"La Kalle" as hurban/reggaeton later Spanish top 40
regional Mexican "La Que Buena"
Spanish adult hits "Recuredo"
the current "La Jefa"

...probably missing something. It changes format or handles fairly often... other than KNOR, all the Univision and Liberman outlets don't seem to maintain the same format or handle very long. All have gone through several in the last 10 years...so they are averaging a change every 3 years on each frequency. 94.1 has been "Estereo Latino", "Recuerdo" and "La Que Buena." 98.3 has been "Jose", "El Norte" and "Z98.3". 101.7 has been "Radio Tricolor", "Super Estrella", "Concierto" and "XO101.7". 104.9 went through multiple formats before it was just leased out to Indian and Pakistani programming. 106.7 went through several formats under the "Casa" handle before its current "La Bonita". 107.9 has been "Amor", "La Que Buena", and "La Kalle."

like maybe... Z-ROCK!
Bill Mercer was one of the folks who put 99.1 on the air. I don't remember the calls (KJZY?)
but I believe the first format was jazz.

"PAGING MR. BISHOP. Mr. Jack Bishop. You have a call holding on the red line, please."
Help us out, Jack. He was there.

I'm not sure if there was another format between jazz and Z-Rock but I DO remember
the OXY-10 voice over guy telling us:

If it's too loud, you're TOO OLD!!!

I missed the 2004 part, T.J. My first reply went back to the beginning days.

I just did the 2004-on, but yes I remember when it was KDZR and Z-Rock and it was KJZY "Jazzy 99.1" before. As a CP, it held the KWDC calls and I think it actually came on with the calls, flipping to the KJZY calls shortly thereafter. I remember picking it up when he was testing and it was under the KWDC calls then.

Sept. 88 - Signed on as KJZY "Jazzy 99.1"
Dec. 27, 1991 - Flipped to Satellite Music Network's "Z-Rock" hard rock format
Dec. 28, 1992 - changed calls to KDZR
Feb. 1, 1995 - Flipped to tejano as "Kick FM"
July 21, 1995 - changed calls to KHCK
April 2004 - Flipped to regional Mexican (cumbia) as "El Cumbiaso"
Apr. 20, 2004 - changed calls to KFZO
Aug. 2005 - Flipped to Latin rhythmic as "La Kalle"
Feb. 18, 2009 - Flipped to regional Mexican as "La Que Buena" (format swap with 107.9)
Sep. 21, 2009 - Flipped to Spanish adult hits as "Recuerdo" (format moved from 94.1)
June 24, 2010 - Flipped to regional Mexican as "La Jefa"

99.1 did start out as KJZY.I had the pleasure of doing afternoons before moving to mornings.By the way look for the next Jack Bishop saga soon and no it will not be in Greenville.

Re: 99.1 kfzo history and 107.9 history.

Domingo:

Thanks for the dates. Would you happen to know the spanish radio history of 107.9 from 1993 to now?

The spanish stations in Dallas were pretty messed up back then. Couldn't figure out which frequency had what and who simulcated who. Just trying to get them right.

Thanks

T.J.

This history is a little more confusing - as there are technically two different 107.9 signals at play.

The original 107.9 was licensed to Corsicana, it was moved to Robinson (near Waco) to make room for the other 107.9, which as a construction permit was licensed to Gainesville. Moving Corsicana's 107.9 to the south made room to move the Gainesville 107.9 to Lewisville.

Nov. 28, 1993 - Country KAND-FM flips to Tejano, simulcasting 99.1 ("Kick FM")
Jan. 15, 1994 – call letters changed to KICI-FM
Feb. 20, 1998 – call letters changed to KDXX-FM and format to Spanish AC
Feb. 2002 – KDXX-FM Coriscana moves to Robinson as KDOS serving the Waco market
KDOS Gainesville re-licensed to Lewisville and signs on as KDXX-FM with Spanish AC format
Jan. 8, 2003 – flips to regional Mexican as “La Que Buena”
Jan. 27, 2003 – call letters changed to KESS-FM
Feb. 18, 2009 – flips to Spanish CHR as “La Kalle” (format moved from 99.1)

There were two 107.9's. The original one was KAND-FM 107.9 Corsicana that rimshot from the south and was re-engineered, moved, and downgraded from a class C1 to A (now the current R&B KWPW 107.9 Robinson-Waco) to allow 107.9C2 Gainesville to upgrade to the current 107.9C1 Lewisville that serves the market now.

Domingo may remember some of the gaps I don't here...

KAND-FM 107.9 changed from country to Tejano "Kick" 11/28/1993 with the call change to KICI-FM on 1/19/1994. "Kick" ended up with a bunch of simulcasts to try to cover the market---
- News/talk KDNT 1440 Denton (now KTNO University Park) changed to a simulcast of "Kick" 12/1/1993 and calls to KICI 3/15/1994.
- KDZR 99.1 Denton flipped from Z-Rock to the "Kick" simulcast 12/1994 and took the KHCK calls 7/21/1995
- KCYT 106.7 Granbury (now KDXX 107.1 Benbrook) flipped from standards to the "Kick" simulcast 2/1995 and the KCKK calls 6/30/1995.

KICI-FM went to "Estereo Latino" KDXX-FM in 1998 (along with simulcasts now on KDXX 1480 Dallas and KDXT-FM 106.7) and later KDOS 107.9 Gainesville

KDXX-FM/KDOS went to "Amor" in 2000.

KDXX-FM changed calls to KDOS (swapping with sister 107.9 Gainesville) and the downgrade and move to Waco as "Que Buena" occurred at the start of 2002. At the same time, the former 107.9 Gainesville (then a C2) upgraded to the present C1 Lewsiville facility as KDXX-FM.

From there, KDXX flipped from "Amor" to KESS-FM "La Que Buena 107.9" 1/2003 (originally it was briefly called "La Raza" but Univision was forced to drop that name since Liberman owned the name). Of course, it has since become "La Kalle."

Re: 99.1 kfzo history FIRST SPANISH STATION

Hey Guys:

I know Dallas' first Spanish station was KESS 93.9 in 1977. Would anybody know what spanish music format they had back then?

Didn't KESS lead way to KSSA and then KOJO?

Thanks

T.J.

KESS-FM went to an all-Spanish language format in April 1976. (KBUY-FM had been primarily Spanish-language during the day as early as 1971, but still had some English-language programming on at night.)

The frequency was moved from 93.9 to 94.1 in 1984, and the calls changed to KSSA in 1986, then KOJO in March 1987. When KOJO flipped to contemporary Christian in July 1987, the KSSA calls and format went to 1600 AM, which had been dark for six months.

And firing up the way back machine...before KAND-FM was KCIR, which came on in 1972. Originally 107.9 was allocated to Terrell, but that was changed to Corsicana, a switch that would later make it possible for the old KNOK-FM 107.5 to move from a short tower in north Fort Worth to a site at Cedar Hill. (Docket 80-90 figured into that as well, but that's another story.) The deleted Class C allocation on 107.9 in Terrell was replaced by a Class A on 107.1 and its first occupant was KTLR-FM, which signed on in 1979.

And going even way further back than that....
107.9 was originally licensed to Dallas. KYBS went on the air in 1949, and was owned by the Texas Baptist Convention. It became the 5th FM station in the area, and was part of a group of religious FM stations throughout the state that went dark by 1952.

Re-allocated to Cedar Hill, 107.9 returned in 1957 as KDFW. That station was on the air less than a year with a classical format before signing off. The license was deleted a year later, and the table of allocations was amended soon after, moving 107.9 out of Cedar Hill.

It did indeed sign on with the KWDC calls, on 9/25/1988. (I've got a tape of it, which Bill Mercer was shocked to get, as he thought they NEVER signed on as KWDC.) It was a matter of days, or perhaps a week, before they took the KJZY calls.

And thanks, Chip and Domingo, for the "Spanish" lesson....feverishly taking notes here for the knus99.com website....no habla here, so I never knew what que was pasa. :)
