99.1 WSBN, Young Harris????

By accident, I ran across a website for an FM station in Young Harris. Their website states it's been on for 50 years. Here's the "station's" site:

http://www.wsbnfm.com/Contactus.html

This is incredibly strange. While I'm not from the area, my inlaws(whom I've been acquainted with for almost 15 years) live in nearby Clay County, NC, and being a radio junkie I thought I'd toured and was familiar with every station within 50 miles! I cannot find anything about this station--with WSBN calls--on the FCC website. I also did a frquency search for 99.1 in Georgia. I do know there's an AM in Young Harris, the former WZEL and it's only been on since the early 80s, or so. Is this station a pirate? I'm thoroughly confused.

Looks like a Part 15 unlicensed station with made-up call letters.

How can one radio station claim to be on the air for 50 years, and no mention of it anywhere in the FCC files? Kind of weird, ain't it?

Kinda close for WCON/Cornelia. It covers the area on 99.3.

Probably a pirate. The call-letters don't exist and there's no FM allotment in Young Harris.

don't think it's pirate but

if it is, they're pretty brazen, because I was through young harris on sunday evening and noticed their call letters on an office. Granted it was in a strip mall type office complex, but it was there for the world to see.

Ironically, the legitimate AM in town (770, which also simulcasts with 1400 in Copperhill, TN and 1370 in Clayton) is in a small strip mall across from the electrical co-op(Blue Ridge EMC, I think) which is less than a half mile west of the traffic light toward Blairsville on Hwy 76. This wasn't the same strip mall, was it?

Not 1370

That's 1340 in Mountain City (WALH)...not WGHC at 1370.<P ID="signature">______________

If you really want to know..let your fingers do the walking..the web site list a phone number..give them a call and ask...

It's A Pirate

I checked with somebody in the biz up in Young Harris and she said she just became aware of WSBN-FM too. Despite what the web site says, it hasn't been there 50 years. And the call-sign they claim to have been originally assigned, WMFC, has been in use in Monroeville, Alabama for over three decades. The Young Harris station is definitely a pirate.

That just happened today because it still said "99.1" this morning. It also used to say that they broadcast from 2200 feet ASL, now it says they serve "the world via the internet." I guess they figured out that people are on to them.

A web broadcaster with a a 50-year history? Yea, right.

I can't even find a link on their website to listen online. Hilarious.

Re: They updated the web site

I'm in Franklin, NC and go past Hiawassee toward Young harris often..think I'll drop by over the weekend..

By Mail: WSBN FM
5804 Plott Town Road
Young Harris, Georgia 30582

Nothing on the air on 99.1 today..but maybe over the weekend..And they have affiliated with the North Georgia News..really weird!
