99.3 Testing?

E

Guest
I was doing some scanning from Round Rock yesterday and it stopped at 99.3 stereo. I am kinda curious about that. Im guessing just some testing at that frequency.

That would be interesting, I'd like to see how strong that station will realy go out south if they are still on.

Wow, I just noticed the testing as well. I am able to pick up the signal quite clearly from my central Austin office (just north of UT campus). Stereo signal and all, from within a concrete building.

They must be really pushing the envelope with that little 6k stick, it must be on some prime property to get that shot into Austin. Ought to be intresting once it's got audio on it. Hopefully it won't be as crummy as his other properties around Tx.

BTW... about a month ago people on this board dismissed that signal as not even being able to make it to the fringe of Austin. Just wanted to go on the record since I was trying to start a discussion to liven this place up a bit!

So, now does anybody know what the status is of 97.7? I think that might be a suprising signal for Austin AND SA (despite contour maps)

KJAZ 99.3 is not going to be a player in the Austin market anytime soon. The only way this station is going to be anything is if KISS in San Antonio downgrades to a C1 or C2 and KJAZ can change the allotment to 99.7 to move into town. I haven't talked to the guys at Cox recently, but i doubt this is likely considering that a) Roy Henderson is the owner of KJAZ and b) KISS just applied and was granted an upgrade.

KJAZ was indeed testing their transmitter recently. I was on eastbound 79 Saturday night and could hear that their transmitter was on. They were not playing in audio. I wanted to listen at the top of the hour for an ID but unfortunately i was able to drive through their entire coverage area before it was time. The signal (where i did get it) was not good. It was very scratchy in Hutto on my very decent aftermartket car radio. I'm sure that KJAZ will dominate the burgeoning Taylor radio market.

99.3 NOW ON THE AIR With music

Well sure enough, 99.3 is now playing music. Assuming this is the ultimate format, they appear to be some form of Classic Country or possible Americana, a la KNBT 92.1 in New Braulfels. A classic Willie Nelson song was just aired at 1:10pm. There are no liners or DJ's right now.. Just one song fading into another... except for the top o' the hour ID (played every other song, actually!).. KJAZ Thorndale-Austin.

Anyone know more details? This could provide an interesting niche format for Austin.. one that could work.

If Roy Henderson owns the station he could be possibly bringing a Lonestar fm station like he has at Victoria and College Station, which is like classic country and americana mixed in, a good format, I wonder how well it will make though with KVET doing about the same thing?<P ID="signature">______________

So I listened to 99.3 last night and this morning on my way into work. I live and work in NW Austin. Interesting choice of music. Lots of Texas oriented songs, plus Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue." It might work in Austin, but as I traveled down Tumbleweed Hill on 2222, I totally lost the signal..and didn't pick it back up until I was on the 3rd floor of my buildings parking garage.

Who owns this signal?

Yeah, thats exactly the format 99.3 is playing now. Interesting indeed.. a mix of Americana and Classic Country. The signal is quite spotty, and succeptible to interference from 99.3 KPSM from Brownwood in NW Austin at times.

Re: 99.3 Poor signal

After testing the signal in the ROund rock area and parts of Austin, it is very weak at best. If you check the FCC maps, none of its core signal hits any city near Austin but Taylor and Elgin. Won't be a player at all in the Austin Market. I still think putting something on 99.7 would be the best choice for a new austin station with a decent signal. (of course, KISS would need to downgrade a bit)

Would ya'll say it began operation on the 7th of October? Fort Bend (another name for Roy's company) fliped KZAM in Victoria at around October of 2003, They seem to be doing realy well, but they also have to compete with texas radio 98.7 down there also.

The station is owned by Roy E. Henderson. He has been around the Texas radio landscape for quite a while and owns a handful of small market stations under a bunch of aliases. Roy is not really a programmer, he usually builds and sells stations.

Some of the other names he goes by are.

-Fort Bend Broadcasting
-Great Northern Broadcasting
-Rawhide Radio
-Far East Telecasters
-Fife Lake Broadcasting
-New Ulm Broadcasting
-Beatty Mountain Broadcasting
-Farmer's Communications
-Cameron Broadcasting

There are probably others.

Texas Music/Americana would seem to fit Austin well, but unless 99.3 can get into the central city with a decent signal, it will be a flop.

I always thought it would be neat if similarly formatted KFAN 107.9 in the Hill Country could get a translator in Austin, or perhaps take over the 99.7 facility.

I've been wondering if Roy Henderson would put this format on his KEZB in Hempstead, which reaches into the NW parts of the Houston market. There has been a fair amount of clamoring for a Texas Music/Americana format in H-Town. The late KIKK-FM sorta tried something similar in its last days, but missed the mark.
