Yeah, KSJ and TK we on the same tower... or less than a mile apart or something like that. Similar heights too.
Could iHeart engineers just bump the power to TK HD to pipe a good commercial free Smooth Jazz HD2 into Mobile that would equal or beat the performance of KSJ?

Yeah, Kiss' signal sucks in analog and the HD is almost non-existent in downtown Pensacola. It always seems good when I check it out in Mobile. Most HD seems to work better on the interstates. The closer to the beaches I get the worse HD reception gets.

That makes sense, since the towers are right there along I-10. My experience has certainly been similar, however the last time I was in a car with an HD radio built-in, I was surprised to take WRKH-HD2 without more than the slightest glitch from Summerdale to Orange Beach and most of the way into Perdido Key before dropouts began. Then it cleared up again along Sorrento and into west Pensacola was pretty much listenable. It wasn't until I was up by the mall that things went sour.

With the new trend of only using them to feed translators, mobile reception is no longer a concern… But I do wonder what kind of signal is considered "reliable" at the translator site to qualify as a direct feed. Of course none of these translators are truly fed 'directly' but via other means, since the sound quality is so much better in analog. Not to mention the translators' audio is usually 15 seconds ahead of the so-called parent HD feed!
 
I don't think any HD FM translators have to be fed directly. The only requirement is the translator being inside the FMs specified contour. In actuality the translator probably feeds the HD2.
Same with AM translators. They often get fed in Stereo and even run 24 hours for Daytimers. I wouldn't be surprised if some AMs were being fed using its FM translator as a STL.

It's only the commercial distant translators owned by a third party that need an OTA feed (i.e. The old WKXN Montgomery translators and the old Tiger translator on 104.9). I don't know how the current 102.7 WKXN translator is set up.

94.9-2 - The Beat
96.1-2 - The Jag
99.9 - 2 Smooth Jazz (why again did it leave in the first place)
101.5-2 - Alternative Feed
107.3-2 - WNTM
 
107.3 is licensed to Pensacola and Cumulus owns the rights to most of WNTMs syndicated programming in Pensacola, so the FM HD simulcast has to be on 94.9, 96.1, or 99.9.
Same with The Jag, syndicated sports can't be fed to the Mobile market by 101.5 or 107.3.
 
I pondered earlier what direction iHeart might take any HD2/3 feeds from Pensacola licensed TK101 and Kiss 107.3 especially since the AMs are filling up the translator spots on the Pensacola dial.
Strange thought: The U. Of West Florida Argos start playing football this year. They are in the same conference as the South Jags. Right now Pensacola has 3 sports stations and the 4 talk stations that carry the major sports broadcasts, so it's not like Pensacola *needs* another sports radio station.

...But would it make sense for iHeart to buy a translator to pair with Kiss or TK HD2 and go with a small sports Translator "The Argo" in Pensacola with a similar schedule to "The Jag" in Mobile?

Have I been drinking too much?
Or is this an obvious future development?
 
I didn't even know they were launching a football team.

It's just pure speculation on my part but I think it's better to go with an established sports station for a partnership instead of this Jag idea of launching their own branded station. Even big colleges like Auburn and Alabama don't have that kind of tie-in with media that I know of.
 
UWF has had a football team for 2(?) years. This year they start playing other teams in Confrence USA. The Argos are modifying downtown Pensacola's waterfront baseball park for home Football games. I believe USA, Troy, Southern Miss, and Valdosta St. are on the schedule this year.
Just a thought. Pensacola must have 3 sports stations (2 on translators) for a reason. iHeart has salesmen working Pensacola with no truly local stations to sell spots on. If iHeart sees Sports as a money maker in Mobile, why not P'cola?
Now we haven't seen any movement whatsoever by iHear or Cumulus to acquire Pensacola translators... so it seems unlikely, but it seems like a good idea.
