How do you know it’s 3000 watts? 99.5 used to be stronger until KVST mentioned interference
I've seen photographic evidence from a colleague of a Houston translator with a BE 2kw transmitter running into a 5 bay antenna for a translator that was licensed for less than 100w ERP. It was also at least 100 feet higher on the tower than it was licensed for.

Surely they have to come down here at some point right? Like these illegal translators can't be illegal forever right??
Until they get fined or on the FCC's radar with enough complaints, they have no reason to stop. And don't call me Shirley...

Nick is also not showing any proof... no one is for that matter. i can sit here and make up numbers and he said she said. I know for a fact the fcc has made some random visits to the wells Fargo tower and these translators continue on the air.
I believe him though. Have you ever range tested these translators? Also the FCC would have known it's originating programming.

K223CW has an amazing 28 watt signal that blasts in well north of the airport, in a null. It also has the only HD radio in the world that can receive KFNC-HD2. Nobody else can receive KFNC’s HD2, even within a mile of the 97.5 tower.

Translators have some crazy HD radios! What about 104.5 that used to get KBXX HD2 before KJOZ actually flipped to that format. Or 105.3 that’s getting KKBQ HD3! Those subchannels must be running some new codec that standard radios can’t pick up!

It just amazes me that even that far south, they can overpower them at 200'. Granted they are only licensed for 25w (ERP at that) but even to the south there is destructive interference. I really only get capture when I get to Bucees in Tx City, which is only a couple of miles from their stick.

Could KHEA petition the FCC for a frequency move? I come from the Part 90 LMR licensing world so I am not sure what the rules are for Part 74.
Did not see 99.5 downtown. The displays on most of the transmitters are not lit up where you can see what they say. However, 1061 is there for anyone to see.

K291CE is supposed to be 40 watts. There must be a lot of line loss if they need 900 watts to make 40 watts ERP. Does K291CE also have a magical HD radio that can receive HD2 stations no one else can?
If by magical you mean KAMA HD4 then yes they do.

And I thought 106.1 was legally powered. I really want to know how strong 94.1 is. Same with 92.5, 104.5 & 105.3

To be clear, I was speaking generally in this post about the translators not needing to change anything, unless the FCC should say they need to. I’m satisfied by the transmitter picture posted in the other thread that the stations are compliant with the FCC regulations, and I think that picture should put the discussions to rest.

Rumor has it that these translators are being leased to the tune of $17,000 per month. One wonders how much of this is finding it's way north to Big D, in order to pay for "protection."

Follow the money.
