99.7-The Fox' "Classic Rock 600 Weekend"

Is named after the Coca-Cola 600 stock car race @Lowes' Motor Speedway in Charlotte -

It's not named after the 600 songs they play throughout the weekend, even though they want the "dumbed-down" listener to think that's what it is.

They don't have 600 different songs in their library!

They're playing the same songs they play hour after hour, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, then repeat them - all to add up to 600 songs, however long it takes to play 600 - a few days or so.

No variety!

There are too many suits working there -

What a sham & a scam!

Hey Fitzy,

You didn't have to do that, but, thanks!

All you have to do is go to WRFX.com to see the 600.

But, IMHO, it still sounds lame.

After all, when you program the same songs in repeated repetition, hour after hour, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, (& not 600, by the way) it's kind of hard to believe they have 600 in their library.

After hearing the same songs all the time, you're numb to any variety.

Predictable.

They could have at least mixed it up with giving away tickets to concerts this Summer.

AMFM is the one whom has too much time on his hands. Then again so do I.

Like clockwork he comes in complaining about the Fox's lack of variety. Dude should rename himself vinyl because he is starting to sound like a broken record! I wonder just who this guy is, by the handle he is using I think that I have an idea but it would be presumptious to speculate further.

From my handle it is pretty transparent where my allegance lies. Speaking of which I for one would NOT want to see 99.7 or The Ride or any commercial radio enterprise deepen their offerings. I want those who want to hear depth to be captive to the niche that I seek to serve. Not that deepening their selections would cause the ratings to increase dramatically because most people just want sounds they are familiar with, if anything broadening one's playlist when considering commercial concerns is just a recipe for a slow death.

Now AMFM if you can go out, sell some advetisers on the validity of your ideas and you can market yourself in a way that gets people to listen in the numbers a station like 99.7 or 95.7 would find viable then more power to you. But the longer I hang around the radio game the better I understand the numbing nature of this beast, again it is numbing rubbish that the average station (regardless of format) trolls out because that is what the average person who is attracted to ANY format really wants. Those who run promo's with listeners commenting on the 'great variety' have those comments made because they are providing a form of variety that the listener finds comfort from. And in this day and age with the volume of different entertainment options that is available sadly you have to dumb down to the lowest common denominator in order to garner the numbers needed to be financially viable. If you want variety, come down to the left side of the dial, go get sirius, or just search the net, plenty of options are available, but to expect a station like The Fox (which as others have pointed out has been very successful over the years) to be the stimulant for change then sir/madam, you are just sadly out of touch with the realities of the industry.

It took me all of 30 seconds to post the 600 songs. Copy. Paste. Wanted to be sure you saw all of them, some have mentioned that they didn't think there were 600 songs in the library. There they are. Artist. Title. All heard on 99.7 WRFX, the most listened to rock station for years in Charlotte (all time maybe?). It's a shame the well-respected program director Jeff Kent doesnt get the credit he deserves.

CC917-
kudos. check out the thread below that was "moved".

CC917,

Agreed on your post.

But, your last statement -

"Expecting the Fox to be a stimulant for change, & being sadly out of touch of the realities of the industry":

It's a shame, isn't it?

It still doesn't make it right, does it?

Surf-
Play what your P1's want to hear. Not hard to believe that Black Betty is higher than Hey Jude on a classic rock station in the southeastern united states. It's all about audience sampling and a great PD (like Kent) knows that. Ratings? I'll take the consistent run of the Fox over most stations. So will an ad buyer looking for M 25-54. They've survived bad demo sampling from the ratings service before.

-It's a shame, isn't it?-
Nope. not really.

-It still doesn't make it right, does it?-
Actually it does. Great music, proven ratings for the demo. A great PD like Jeff Kent would be very happy and probably well compensated. If we were all so lucky!

So, how were these 600 songs determined? I've done similar promotions in the past. If it's by listener votes or requests, once you get by the top tier of songs (10-20?), rarely are there enough "votes" for a given song to determine a) which songs to include and b) in what order).

Even if they were to use their most recent auditorium music test (if there is such a thing today), it would be difficult to rank the songs once you get to the lower end of the list.

In other words, as far as ranking -- these types of weekend promotions are largely a creation of the station's Program and Music Director. They have little to no relevance as far as popularity with the audience.

Did you ever hear of a listener turning the radio OFF because of a song he LIKES? True variety results in playing bad songs - and listener tune out! Right?

Hey "Fitzy"

You seem to have an answer for everything.

Even SurfDude says the Fox is in ratings trouble.

IMHO, I think it's a shame, & I still think that it doesn't make it right, no matter how you think how great the music sounds (they beat the same songs into your head 24/7), the ratings for this demo, or how happy or well-compensated J. Kent is.

It's about making the most listeners happy as possible, not just one demo, & not about J. Kent being happy or well-compensated.

After all, this is a Mass Appeal format/demographic.

Hey! " "

If someone asks a question, they can expect an answer.

"making the most listeners happy as possible, not just one demo..After all, this is a Mass Appeal format/demographic."

Soooo, the Fox, Radio Disney, and Link are all going after the same people?
My experience says that is not the case.

The Fox may have a ratings blip. I'd hardly call it trouble in the CC world.

I think we can agree that San Dimas High School Football rules. Yes?

Fitzy95,

Agreed, San Dimas High School Football rules, & The Fox, Radio Disney & the Link aren't skewing, focusing & concentrating on the same demos, but, listeners do scan a lot, &, whatever station they tune in, they should be able to hear a hit, not an obscure song or one that they've heard an indescribable amount of times, such as the Fox playing the same stuff they have for 18 years - Fleetwood Mac or Pink Floyd. This is 2008!

It's pretty pitiful to see a person never change or grow in 20 years, we all know people from high school like that,
and I guess to me, the same could be said for a radio station since it's made up of people. It just seems like watching a train wreck or a friend never develop past 18 years old.
